Corn Snakes and Fumes

NUMBER 1: I was thinking about this the other day, and figured I would ask some opinions about corn snakes and spraying things around them. Like, I LOVE smelly things. Smelly candles, sprays, lotions...everything. But...I keep my three corns in my room, all with open air lids on their vivs.

I have three types of room spray. Two are very strong, but I love them (they last allll day) and one that is kinda dull, so I spray it ALOT. I also use alot of Febreeze and such...(I LOVE febreeze.) I also have one of those air freshener fan things. Yeah, its alot...but I make sure they all match and go good with each other. So I have three sets, 1st set is tropical (beach, citrus), second is flowery (lavender, rose, ect) and one is fresh (linen, cotton ect)...I change scents every week. I know, its so OCD...but my room smells AMAZING, without being overbearing.

Also, I use Hairspray and other aerosols in my room...two fragrence sprays (I think two...maybe more) are aerosols. I also have hairspray and heat styling spray that I use almost everyday.

Let me think...there is some more I was gonna ask about. Oh yeah, shoe cleaner. I use that on my white tennis shoes alot.

The question is, are any of these things harmful to snakes. I know they can't "smell" but I was just wondering. I'm sure they aren't, but you never know

NUMBER 2: I made a HUGE rookie mistake today and overfed my newest corn. My first two corns are on a schedule that I am used to, but not my third. Well feedind day comes around, and I fed all three of my snakes instead of just the two. So my newest snake got two meals in two days...I'm not to worried, I am sure he will be fine but figured I would share my moment of brain-loss with everyone. On the bright side, at least they are all on the same schedule now.

NUMBER 3: Can you tell a snake is shedding by behavior alone, or has anyone ever had a completely normal snake before, during and after the shedding process?

Any kind of chemical - domestic cleaner, air freshener, room scenter, deodorant or perfume etc - is very dangerous to Corns. Most are potentially toxic.

Time to limit your spraying and freshening to the bathroom, I'm afraid!

And snakes do indeed smell, but this is more of a sense of "taste". They collect particles on their tongue, which is then insterted into the roof of their mouth (the Jacobsen's Organ) to determine "smell".

Shouldn't be a problem feeding two days in a row as long as you leave the snake in question in peace to digest. If it regurges, there are a set of guidelines somewhere on here so you should be able to handle it. Think the risk is minimal though.

As for shedding, some breeze through it without seeming to notice, some turn into raging nutjobs, refusing food and biting anyone that goes near them (a minority really!), plus all points in between. Shedding behaviour is very individual to each Corn, so you'll just have to watch each of them carefully and find out what they're like.

It might just be paranoia, but I'm avoiding burning incense on my altar until we no longer have a studio apartment and Cornwallis isn't kept in the same room space. So I'd be leery of spraying things.

I have cut down on my sprays, but the snakes substrate SMELLS and the snakes SMELL. Its probably not that bad, but I notice is ALOT when I stop spraying and its sooo annoying I can barely sleep at night!

I'm still using hair products, because those don't really "smell" and I am still using all my plug in air freshners. But I hate to stop using Febreeze, that stuff is amazing.

That seems odd, that they smell so much it's disturbing your sleep. The only smell I notice in Cornwallis' viv is from his silk leaves...kinda fabric-y. Maybe they're musking?

Of course, I've lived with animals my whole life, and have two cats and a litterbox, so animal smells don't tend to disturb me much. Probably someone more experienced with snakes than me can comment on that issue.

You can get specifically-designed deodorisers for reptile habitats that are non-toxic for them. I'm not at home at the mo so can't give manufacturer, but I use mine when I have visitors due, the snakes have just dropped a fresh one, and opening the windows after rapid cleaning just won't help in time!

But really, a tank shouldn't smell. The only thing around a reptile that can emit a smell, is poop. Are you sure it hasn't done the classic "stealth poop" and hidden it underneath the substrate? They're good at that!

I swear, they have some attachment to their poop... they hide it
Well, at least Colubrids do, as the feces is easily covered up by the substrate.

Boids though... oi, they can try as much as they like to hide that dune of manure...
