Corn snakes in the classroom...periodic updates to my Chgo classroom donation :)

It's never too late to go back to school! :)

Fritz the happy school boy...
fritzthehappyschoolboyqb5.jpg

I walk to school, so I carried him in his little Tupperware container that he came to me in from Terri via Connie, with aspen from his own viv so that he'd have his smell about him. As it is cold, I put him inside of my coat, right against my chest, but I also managed to drop & smash my tea traveling mug on the ground, so I walked to 7-11 for some coffee. I didn't think anything of it when the cashier asked what I had bulging out of my coat -- because I'm so proud of the darling -- but my boyfriend later pointed it out to me that he may have thought I was stealing. Nonetheless, I showed him the container, much to the surprise of him and the customer behind me. Both thought it was very cool, especially after I explained that I'm a teacher. :)

We got to school just fine, and the office staff naturally wanted to see him. Everyone was expecting a ferocious looking beast, apparently. I told everyone that he's over 2' long, and they seemed to have expected the same in diameter, I guess. Anyway, the staff seemed to be in continual shock when I explained that he eats mice. Really, duh. No, no kidding at all - duh. And, they thought it more bizarre that I keep frozen mice in my freezer. My response was, "You keep frozen dead chickens in your freezer, what's the difference?" Ah, well...the ignorance that I shall combat eventually enough.

So, I made sure all was going well with Fritz's tank and so forth. I even came dressed for the occasion -- wearing Kathy Love's "Corn snakes...always in good taste!" T-shirt & jeans. :) I totally forgot that it was also the Principal for a Day event where local business people come in to play principal...and I knew that the principal would be back to visit to see the snake & whaddaya know, but who was at my door at 9:30 am? Oh, yes...but all were interested & calm about it. (Jeans are usually for casual Fris, but...we don't have school tomorrow so I felt it best to wear them with my shirt...oh, well! I'm in good standing, especially now that my classroom is more science-y than either of the other two science teachers classrooms!)

The kids were excited...we started by making a word web on corn snakes to use it as inspiration for a classroom name for Fritz.

cornsnakewordwebuk8.jpg

Then, later, when I had only half the class with me, we discussed the vivarium rules (if you can read the card on my photo of the tank, they're there...) and after some hand sanitizer, we sat in a circle on the rug and I held Fritz and we talked about how to pet him. Fritz was as calm as could be -- and so were the kids. NOT ONE KID was afraid to touch him, and all of them were thrilled when he wanted to slide onto them. They were fascinated by how soft/smooth/silky he is. It was brilliant.

We checked temps all day long to make sure that all was going well, and then I put him in his tank. When I finally got him in there, I realized as I opened the little Tupperware container that something didn't smell so sweet. Apparently, from all of the holding and looking, he finally gave me some poo. I swear, he holds onto it after his meal as if it is precious gold, afraid to let it go. Maizie & Belle poo right away; Fritz -- virtually an eon...:p At least he held on to it versus pooing on a student! Soon enough, just not the first day...:)

I wanted him to get a drink and I put him in his palatial water bowl, but he wasn't so much thirsty as he wanted to swim...! And then he stopped to rest...and down into the aspen he went.

And, here is Fritz's set-up...we still haven't voted on a name, so I'm still calling him Fritz. I wanted the kids to come up with names that are herp/reptile/snake related, but I still have those that suggest "Jay Z" or "Max" or "Joseph" (after himself, of course). When I ask how those names are reptile related, I get shrugs. Or, I got the kid who suggested "Nocturny" or even "Farmsnake"...ok, those at least have something to do with the snake, but c'mon, where's the imagination? One girl suggested "Slither" after we discussed how he moves...that's getting better! I'll bring up his color & other details next week... Anyway...Fritz has a nice big tank with lots of aspen and a nice warm side and a plant to hide in and the kids are bringing in toilet paper rolls and paper towel tubes and toothpaste boxes faster than I can stuff them in there. One girl even brought me her collection of gumball machine toys from some cartoon. Hmmm...we'll see on that one. Not bad, huh? And, the fish tank is right next to it, too...it's covered in algae at the moment (delayed action betta feeder tablets! whatta mess! instead, the betta comes home with me this weekend & the cherry shrimp and the otocinclus can go nuts...), but the kids love it all. :)
classroomsetupforfritzke6.jpg

And, that's all until Mon! I'm hoping for some photos of the kids holding Fritz, getting a name down, some letter-writing/thank-yous :), and then observing times of shedding, measuring the previous shed to the recent one, observing how he moves, and comparing reptiles with amphibians -- which we're getting into now, as well. It will also be good when we go to the zoo in two weeks. So far, so good!

Oh, poop...

I just realized after I posted the previous post that I forgot to remove the attached photos that I inserted into my post, and while looking at the post, I saw no edit button...:shrugs: So I did a quick search on how to remove the photos, and no avail, so my apologies for the repeats. I got too excited, I guess...:p

Now I'm wondering if the principal will mention Fritz at tomorrow's teacher's meeting...he got all excited when I brought a ton of plants into my classroom and acknowledged that at a meeting, so I wonder about my hunny-bunny (who is under two padlocks & key, not to mention my classroom door which is a complete b*&^% to open!). :)

So, again, sorry about the duplicate photos and if you know how to get rid of them, enlighten me -- please. :)

It looks like it was a blast. Your kids are very lucky to have you as a teacher!

Joanna

WooHoo! Thanks for the awesome update! Fritz is looking as cute as ever! I am glad he is doing well and that the kids LOVE him.

He's gonna make a great addition to your class! Keep up the good work!

Aaaah! I wish you were my teacher in elementary. I only remember one of my elementary teachers, and if one of the others had had a classroom snake, I definitely would have remembered that one.

It's good that the kids love him. It's especially good that they're young, so you're converting many, and it's before they're old enough to build up a predjudice against snakes.

Anerys are adorable! Fritz needs more close ups. ;)

By the way, I think you can only edit if you're a Contributing Member. ;)

Congrats on the successfull day!!! I like the sign "RULES, NO EXCEPTIONS". Can't read the rules but i can guess what some of them are. (Do not put Fritz on the floor and walk away). :grin01: Hope all goes good for you, your class, and Fritz!!!

I forgot to mention...

I took a series of photos of the last time I fed Fritz and I'm going to make it into a slideshow for my students so that they can see the process before I actually show them. Seeing it on TV is one thing, live is a total other world.

I also have a reptile slideshow of when I visited our local aquarium with their reptile/Komodo Dragon extravaganza, and my leopard geckos and my bearded dragon will also be visiting later on, along with my amel & normal (especially around MLK, Jr, Day to discuss color differences...;) The kids are totally into comparing* themselves with the snakes now!)...so the kids will be getting their reptile fill, for sure. :)

*One big comparison we made was when I asked, what if a stranger with candy approached you on the playground? You'd runaway, you'd scream if he grabbed you, or you'd fight if he tried to take you. A snake would first try to run away, then hiss or rattle, and then bite to try to get away. The kids were amazed when they realized this...it was awesome, and now they don't worry about being bitten at all. They know that it has completely to do with fear, and because of that, they're not afraid. :)

I did that because we have one science teacher who is from H-E-double-hockey-sticks when it comes to thinking that she's above the rules...and I've been pretty clear with her that this is MY snake, so MY rules go. The rules are basically: 1) hand sanitizer (I wrote that Fritz doesn't want our germs -- clean hands before & after, even if you only come over to observe!), 2) No banging or tapping on the glass (I hate when kids do that at the zoo!), 3) No touching the mesh lid -- except for the thermometer, 4) The snake likes quiet -- shhh! (more for my sanity, above all!), 5) No handling except with me, 6) The vivarium is to be kept locked at all times unless I am there to unlock it, 7) Happy herping & learning! :)

I quick wrote those up this morning...good conversation piece, and I felt that it gave me more serious leverage with the principal. :) They work. :)

Outstanding! Looks like Fritz has a great home and is doing his job well as a classroom mascot.

Congrats on the first day going so well and I can't wait for more pictures.

8. no kissing the snake (kids today :))

First, it was eating paste...now, teachers have to worry about kissing snakes. Oy, what has this world come to?!

Actually, since seeing "The Stinky Cheese Man" play (if you don't know the children's book by the same title, buy it -- it's all your favorite fairy tales rewritten into "Fairly Stupid Tales"...it's hysterical & your favorite kid(s) will adore it!) where the princess kissed a frog -- who stayed a frog -- I worry more about them trying that...:p

Mon morning, imaginary conversation, poop :)

It's only Tuesday, and already what a week! :p

So, Mon morning rolled around and I was just about ready to leave the apt when I almost forgot to grab Fritz. I opened his Sterilite/condo, and it was really unbelievably too bloody damn cute: he was ready, alert & awake -- waiting for me. His little head was popped up out of the aspen and he was looking around, as if waiting for me to get him! I put my hand in by him and he came right out to me...I just about melted, I was so charmed! :) So, I popped him and some aspen into the container and usually, he just buries right down into it...this time, no way! He stayed up on top of the aspen through the walk out of my bldg, outside to my car, during the drive and into the school! He didn't burrow down into it until once inside my classroom for 20 mins! It was as if he'd been waiting for me and now that he was at school, he was able to get over his excitement and calm down, down enough to sleep...:)

Thus, in the midst of my morning musings (while walking to my car...), I imagined that Fritz just've told Maizie (my amel corn, about 4 months old, maybe female?, and really -- just as sweet and gentle as can be!), "Sssssssss...guess what?!"

Maizie: "Sss, what?"
Fritz: "My house is bigger than YOURssssss!"
Maizie: "No, it'ssssssss not! I can ssssee your condo, and it'ssssss smaller than mine!"
Fritz: "Not this condo, dummy! My house at SSSSSSSchool!"
Maizie: "Who're you callin' dummy?! And school? What do you know about school?"
Fritz: "I go to school now! And I have a HUGE houssssssse and lotsssssss of people who come to see me and I get to be with mom all during the day and no one to bother me at night -- no cats, no one!"
Maizie: "Hmmm, you may be on to something there...no cats, you sssay? Sssssounds good to me...and a bigger house? Wow, that definitely sounds good...although, I like the size of mine, but it'd be fun to explore."
Fritz: "Yeah, and now I'm an educated ssssssssnake, too." ;)

(See what being a creative teacher will do to you, especially before the caffeine intake & on the way to school??? Bloody h-e-double-hockey sticks... :crazy02: )

So! The kids were excited to see Fritz again...in fact, I forgot to mention: since the kids didn't have school on Fri, I only saw the kids of my mentor-lead-teacher when I student-taught and her kids -- I had her oldest two already -- were excited to see Fritz, too...I got photos of them holding him. And, when the kids came this morning, I pointed out something that made me happy: Fritz pooped! Usually it takes him what seems at least a week, and he ate 2 fuzzies on Fri night, so by Mon night -- 3 days later, poop! The kids were grossed out, but I may have to borrow back from my niece the book I gave her: Everyone Poops (I gave it to her earlier this year and it became a favorite! Ava is 2 & I bought it more so that I could get a laugh out of my prim/proper mother reading it to her...;) ) If you don't know this book, buy it under the pretense of giving it as a gift to a young one in your life & you'll get a huge laugh out of it! (Another good one is The Gas We Pass ...enjoy!)

And...the best thing yet? A student who has seemed to be completely unmotivated since the beginning of the year told me that he was at the library looking up books on corn snakes. I'm in awe...I need to figure out something to work out motivation-wise for this student so that he doesn't fail 2nd grade (he's already failing...), and I could really owe it all to Fritzi...*fingers crossed*

Time to sleep! Report cards tomorrow -- and Fritz has lots of parents to meet! :)

It's so good that Fritz is even motivating kids as well as teaching them to be unafraid of snakes. It's amazing how he "knew" that he was going to school. I wish Rose was that enthusiastic... *Looks at Rose, Rose looks back, says "What? I'm a corn snake!"*

... And three cheers for poop!

Yea!!! Congrats on the 1st week!!! Lets see how many parents you can get to hold Fritz. :grin01: Now you need to watch out because Mazie will try to sneak into school also. Well good luck with report cards and the parents.

*Phew!* Report cards went ok...the best part is when I talk to parents who already know their kids and find that the grades that I give them are really no surprise. Gotta love that. :)

So! I think that I already mentioned that this past Fri was a professional development day, meaning no kids, but one teacher does bring her kids -- I student-taught with this teacher, and I've also taught 2nd grade to her two oldest children, and next year I'll have her youngest. Her oldest finally came to see me & meet Fritz today (and bloody h&^%, I didn't bring my camera and I had two prime photo opps!) and I missed getting a photo of Fritz with Isaiah. I *also* missed getting a photo of Fritz with Sophia, my beloved former colleague's 5-month old baby girl. (Mia resigned this past June when Sophia was born to stay home with her...and she came back to visit & I sat with Sophia in my lap & Fritz in my hand and Sophia was just enraptured with Fritz!) When Mia sends me the photo, I'll be sure to post it...it's too cute for words. :)

Anyway! I did get photos of Elijah & Jeremiah with Fritz, and this coming week, more of the students with Fritz...I *really* can't wait 'til we go to the zoo this coming Thurs & talk the ears off of the docents about corn snakes. It will be too awesome. :)

To the photos: First & second, it's Elijah with Fritz, and he was just too thrilled to be holding him. :) Third, it's Elijah & Jeremiah, and I really had to talk Jeremiah into easing up on his grip on Fritz! Finally, it's Jeremiah with what he preferred to be holding: the mutant flourescent stuffed corn snake. :)

Wow beautiful picks!!! I wonder why in that last picture he looks very calm?? :shrugs: So im guessing your going to the Chicago Zoo. That should be fun and cold. :grin01: Post more picks when you get them.

Just caught up with this thread.. congrats on getting the snake in the class! Your room, from what I can see, looks wonderful, and those pictures of him with the kids are wicked cute.

So exciting! I'm really glad I can see how everything's going.

That would be either Lincoln Park Zoo or Brookfield Zoo. I prefer Brookfield myself.
