Cost of feeding!

So I haven't used all my supply but had to reorder as most of mine are on hoppers as is my monitor lizards. However, three months of feeding two monitors and it was 14 15 snakes up until recently the cost of feeding has only been 47/month for these animals. And monitors are expensive in food thanks to rodentpro and their cheap prices. I can't believe how much money I have wasted by just buying from work where i could spend....... 60 a week on rodents just for the monitors alone. I am a dummy... If i calculate with all the mice gone etc I think I could drop the average to 40 as well.

very VERY satisfied with the cost efficiency of them not to mention the quality of the frozen animals

I'm new to all this, but for the person like me who is feeding a solo corn, the local store seem to be the answer for F/T. It would take me a very long time to go through even a single bag of 100 pinkies from RodentPro.

I'm glad that for those who need quantity, there are reasonably priced sources!

Which gets me to the point. Around the house we joke that at around $2 per F/T pinky, it's pretty expensive. I just think of it as mouse mignon. The only thing that makes it affordable is the small quantity I have to buy per month for one little snakey. And, if push ever comes to shove I'll eat beans and rice before I don't provide proper food for my corn.

Yeah... That I can understand, if I only had one I'd buy locally too. It only took 20 pinks to get to the next stage for my baby babies. And now 11 fuzzies later they are 3 grams away from hoppers so it will be maybe 15-16 fuzzies in total before I go to hoppers.

They truly grow fast these little shoe strings!!

Lol, on the fast growing shoe strings. I look forward to moving up to 2 pinkies per feeding under the Munson plan soon!

Layne Labs sells them in smaller quantities so you don't have to go for 100 at a time.

Or if you know of someone in your area you can split the order, we do that often down here in Phoenix.

Thanks Smigon. Because of the smaller quantities, even with shipping, Layne would be a better option for me. I spent a lot of time of their site this evening, doing the math. It looks like even a total order of 50 to 75 pinks, fuzzies and large fuzzies would markedly cut my per mouse cost, shipping included. And from this evening's research, they are very high quality mice, too.

The only person I know who I can share with at present has an Afican House snake that eats fuzzies.

That's the other issue I have at the moment; I have to guess how many of each size to order for a growing baby. I've only had him a month so I don't yet really know if he's a fast or a slow grower.

If you have a reptile show in your area, you can usually get smaller quantities there. We have one on mice and one on rats, so it's not worth it to order mail order. I've also found local folks to piggyback off of as I've gotten involved in local herp groups.

If I ever have leftover babies I feed them to the big guys before their large mouse meal; sort of an "appa-teaser" if you will.

You can also post on Craigslist to see if anyone wants to share.

Good luck!

Great ideas. Thanks! I'm definitely leaning towards ordering from Layne Labs in the coming week.

There are no shows in the immediate area, but there are a number of herp or herp inclusive shows in the greater Chicagoland area including the big Tinley Park show which is 2x a year. I'm just now learning about them. Having even one little corn is opening up a whole new world to me.

The local pet store that I love sells pinkies for $11/box of 6. It's ridiculous. Luckily, I found out that American Rodent Supply is in Indianapolis just a short drive away.

They only sell pinkies in quantities of 50, but at $21 with tax, it seemed like a no brainer even if some go to waste. Unfortunately, that may mean that I'll wait until 30-33 g before upping to fuzzies.

Is it a bad idea to feed 3 pinkies in one feeding? Some of the pinkies I have are small (<2g), and I feed him once a week. I could increase to every 5 or 6 days if that's the better option.

at that size you can feed every 5 days according to the munson plan. I feed pinkies every 5 days, fuzzies every 6 and hoppers and bigger once a week. Munson says you can do it a little more aggressive but I don't like that. And one time I ran out of hoppers so I fed a combo of 1 hopper 1 pinky to have appropriate size (going by weight)

It is okay to do two pinkies, I wouldn't chance three for fear of a regurge. You really need to increase the width of the prey, not length, for better digestion.

Also, pinkies are the only recommended size to feed in twos, any larger prey fed in quantities of more than one is also asking for a possible regurge.

Thanks! This is what I figured but wanted to make sure.
