craft plants= ok?

measley

Smile, you are alive!!
So I wanted to put some fake plants in Melman's viv so he could climb a little more easily but they were about $20 at petco and walmart and someone standing next to me in the aisle gave me the idea to go to the craft section at walmart and get some fake plants thee. They had some nice ones that were bendy and would work great in my viv for only about $3...

My question is, does anyone think there would be any negatives to using these in the tank or could it possibly somehow hurt my snake?

If anybody has any advice or any wild guesses, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I have them in my snake's viv. Check the ends for wires sticking out. I have 2 garlands in a 72 gallon viv and it looks pretty good.

I bought some cheap little plants at Michael's craft store... It cost like $15 for six plants for my 3 terrariums... I saw some nice vines at walmart I want to get also... If wires are hanging out you could probably buy some floral tape (you can get it at wal mart) and wrap the ends good so your snake doesn't get hurt...:D Have fun decorating...

Yeah I've been using that type of plant for years with no issues what so ever. As already stated as long as you cover the wire ends, or find some without wires sticking out you're good to go!

Before I went to live plants in my fish tanks, I used some artificial. I covered the wires with a dab of silicone, so any of the suggestions should work fine. I have fake plants in my three vivs now without problems. My corn does seem to prefer to poop on his which is a pain with a large vine, but it washes off easily enough.

We will expect photos when you're all done, though!! :)

I have off of work for 4 days so I expect I will spend at least the better part of my weekend redecorating!! I will post photos as soon as I get it together! Thanks again for the advice!!!

no. Definately not.

Thanks for the advice, yet again! here are the pictures I promised!! I'm going back to get some more plants! But here's what I've done so far!!

Here's Melman exploring...

and here's melman before feeding time Friday...

Melman? ROFL! What a fantastic name!

He looks like a very happy little guy in his redecorated home!

I have used these for a while, although recently I have wondered a bit about the ones I have been using.

The leaves are starting to seperate, each leaf is really two seperate leaves that start out stuck together on the ones I use (from the hobby section of walmart). There has to be some sort of adhesive used to stick them together, and I wonder what effects there could be from long term exposure.

I came home today and Melman was peering out at me from the top of the branches! it was so cute!! I'm glad I did it!!

I will keep an eye out about the glue... thanks for the advice, Coty!

Nice job on your decorating! Melman looks like he's enjoying your efforts. Yeah, the hot glue gun is my friend when I'm working on plants for a viv. Aquarium sealant works also, but the glue gun is just plain easier. Neither of those give off any dangerous fumes. I wouldn't worry about fumes from sealants used in the manufacture of the fake plants unless the viv wasn't well ventilated.

If it helps, I've used craft shop plants with my Corns for years and haven't noticed any ill-effects.

If in doubt, the ones you buy from pet stores are specifically made for use with reptiles. Stick with them if you're concerned (although I can't see a reason to be).
