Creamsicle at Petsmart

Hi everyone, back in October of 2013, I was getting supplies for my first cornsnake. I liked to see what they had in their assortment, so I looked inside and saw a pale orange snake. He didn't look like the others they had at all. I inquired if he was considered fancy as that's what they call the ones that aren't normals. The guy said no, was confused about why he looked so different and suggested that he shouldn't even be with the cornsnakes at all. Well, I bought the snake and named him Butters. I'll try to upload a pic as I'm not sure exactly what he is, he doesn't look like the creamsicle juveniles I've seen. I've seen some unusual morphs at my local Petsmart, they come home with me. Anyone else experience this?

The big box pet chains are not very reputable for selling good live animals as their products. There is no such thing as a "fancy" corn snake (unless you put her in heels and some pearls around her neck), it is a tactic to add to the price. They are notoriously not as well taken care of as corns from breeders since they are cohabbed in the same enclosure, and they rarely have a background on their birthdate, weights, feedings, hets, etc. that a breeder could provide you with.

Definitely post a pic, I know someone here can help ID your kiddo as close as possible, but as long as he is happy and healthy and you love him that is all that matters.

I believe that a lot of their snakes comes from overstock from breeders who wholesale groups to these stores so the stores don't even know what they are getting. And more often than not the employees are not experts on all the animals, I have talked to some who couldn't tell a corn from a python.

In 2012 I found a female corn that looked "odd" at an Illinois Petco, I have now discovered her to be a likely Mahogany since Gourmet Rodent provides a lot of the stock at Petco's. So yes, you can get some good finds at pet stores if you know what you are looking at.

I've noticed a normal looking corn with almost light pink color between the dark patches at the local PetCo, maybe the lighting was playing tricks, but all their other corns look more normal than this one. I would love to see what that one grows up as an adult, alas we already have our snake and this little thing at PetCo look really skinny, it's been there for a few weeks, I don't know if it would make it even if someone ended up purchasing it.
