curling

permethius

greatest golf ball ever
ive been starting to watch this sport, its kind of interesting if you ask me, but my favorite winter sport is between ski jump and speed skating

We are semi-avid curling fans. Once we learned the ins and outs of the game, we realised it's not shuffleboard on ice. It's like the commentator said, "Chess on ice." The Americans got knocked out by some really good teams this year. We are hoping to get tickets to the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010, but I know the Canadians will fill up the curling arena pretty fast.

the mens team is going pretty isnt it, i heard there tied for first place. but the womens team has been knocked out

I must have read something wrong. It looks like the Men's team is sitting at #2 and they're going to the medal round. Way to go, USA!

My usual night shows are off because of the Olympics...So the other night I watched the "curling" crap for about half hour. It does look like Ice Shuffleboard. I thought it was pretty dumb and was annoyed that my X-Files and Angel shows was off for that.

It's one of the few things we've (we being the Brits .... Scots to be precise ;)) had much success at in the Winter Olympics recently.

Our womens team are defending champs ..... but look like going out. :(

The men are doing well though. Look like going through to the final four for the medal deciders .... where we can knock your boys out ..... ;)

Bloke that sits opposite me at work plays .... quite good apparently. Can't say it's a game thats ever appealed to me much though .......

I'd never watched curling before but watched the last ½ of the womens match between Sweden and the USA the other night and found it terribly impressive. The accuracy...wow! When I wasn't laughing up a lung at that hillariously frantic scrubbing I was boggled by the skill.

same here. I had no idea how to play but can't stop watching. Love it when they throw wrong and go crazy switching between sweeping and not sweeping. :crazy02:

That's not throwing wrong...that's casting it on a particular track and then using the brushes to change the level of friction to make the stone curl one way or the other and stop in the right place. Nothing is by chance in that sport...truely amazing!

HEH!

While the whole Olympic experience really has annoyed me more than anything, I miss my Law & Order. I'm just annoyed that "the whole world can come together for 14 days of peace" but can't seem to manage it the other 351. Just shows what a little effort can result in, if you ask me.

Curling is one of those things that if you can scrub a floor that hard, you're hired to mop my kitchen floor. =P

Hockey and speed skating are the only two sports I've sat down long enough to watch before flipping the channel back to PBS.

To each his own. I'm impressed by sports with strategies and thought, not just physical strength. It's a game that men and women can compete in equally. Its not fast paced. It can be just as boring to watch as golf, bowling or tennis if you ask me, but I can appreciate it for what it is. As much as I enjoy a game or two, since I work evenings and don't get to watch much TV, I'm not going out of my way to sit and watch it on my off hours. If its on when my hubby and I are home, we may tune in. We'd much rather watch bull riding.

Precisely!

I can sit and watch dressage all day and appreciate all of the hard work that goes into a simple shoulder in let alone tempi changes or a beautiful piaffe...Thomas just sees it as a bit of trotting then a bit of cantering and a bit of trotting again... :twoguns:

Yea, 'cause, I guess each country out there is at war with all the others for 351 days a year.

Seriously though, curling does look rather silly, and reading through the rules and technical terms hurts my head... but it's entertainment one way or the other! Some sports are that way I guess. It's boring to watch golf or bowling, but most people have fun playing it themselves.

The subtleties in dressage or any other equine event (cutting, for example) is completely lost on most people. My hubby is cheerfully learning more and more about horses and different events. He can't get enough either!

It's kind of funny how dressage and cutting are from completely different schools of horsemanship yet both demand very controlled movements and a high level of responsiveness from the animal.
I have been watching a bit of the olympics, but they only seem to show events if the U.S. is doing well or expected to win a medal. I'm interested in some of the games even if we are not contenders...
I enjoyed the 'snowboard cross' the other night, always like the hockey games. but I changed the channel when ice dancing was on lol.

We've got a tough game against the Fins.

Still, you never know, if we get past the Fins and you guys can beat the Canadians could be a UK vs USA final.

Form book says we'll be playing off for the bronze though .....

Hey guys, I whipped out the old Wikipedia and looked up Curling. Fantastic information :) It's weird, Although I don't know all the rules etc.. And at some points don't know what the hell's happening. i find it mesmerising to watch lol.

Kindof like snooker. Which at first I found mind-numbingly boring. But then I saw a fullsized table with my own eyes and they are HUGE. And not only do the players have good accuracy, But the pro's actually know where they want every ball to be several turns later! S'gooood'

Check out the link it's really interesting.
