Custom Cages

I <3 Stripes!
I just wanted to check out what everyone's opinions are on these prototypes. We were experimenting with some scrap wood (from building my rack). They're made from 1/2" plywood, belly heat and display lighting included...I'm not keeping this set though, I want a one piece unit a little larger then this for my Ball Pythons.

Wow blkat, those are really nice. What are you using for belly heat? And what are the dimensions? Too bad I'm not a neighbor, I'd snatch those up!

Lock yer trailers, we gots a peepin Jen!

Those are wonderful! Tha only suggestion I might make is havin the door hinge from tha top or bottom as opposed ta right an left. This allow fer a bit easier access in all room sitations.

i think they are lovely! for those wanting to display their animals, yours is one of the most attractive units i've seen. beats the heck out of book shelves and aquariums.

Not only that, but speaking from a cabinet guys perspective. Eventually having the hinges on the sides with big doors, they will tend to rack, sag and warp.

What type of lighting is that? Look like small halogens to me. Those get EXTREMELY HOT! I've seen people try them in cages before, they just don't work out like you'd hope or expect!

Just a heads up!

27 3/4" L x 16 1/4" D x 13 3/4" H are the dimensions

A 12" piece of 11" heat tape is sandwiched beneath the tile board.

Thanks for the suggestion, Cooter. :) I was thinking of the same thing; have them hinged to pull down. These of course are just prototypes to test a few things out. The outside of these actually match my "furniture quality" rack. I'm going to make my one piece set out of melemine I think (with of course the fancy outside).

Possum, that is EXACTLY what I'm looking for in building these cages! I want something you'd be PROUD to have sitting in your living room! Something customized (we can do a couple different outside patterns - this was just left over from my rack) that would look as good as the animals on display!

Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it. Would the doors still sag/warp if they were pull down???

I'm not sure what kind of lights are in them, my buddy picked them out. I'll have to give him a chirp and ask him. We might have to pull them out.

Elongated doors tend to droop and warp over time since tha weight is loaded on tha shorter side. Ya also run tha risk of pullin tha screws out as a result of that weight.

Sag, no they shouldn't. Warping and swelling is always a possibility when you have wood in the space as moisture/humidity. Even more present when you are dealing with a partical board product (melamine)

In the meatime, plug them in and throw a thermometer probe in there.

hehe yeah me either...

Steph, those cages are shweeeet, very nice job...how about instead of the mini halogens a small (12") flurescent instead? (sp)...Keep up the nice work on those :*)

Blkkat...that unit came out absolutely purty! I love the concept. I'm sure you'll get lots of comments and be able to perfect your product! Now...if you wanted to ship that to Calif. to see how it works out on the left coast...you just let me know! *giggle* Best of luck to you!

You were right, Quigs! The temps with the lights on were 142F directly beneath the light, 95F 1/2 way down, and 85F floor. Gebhart received a good scolding for not testing the lights first. I also received a nice burn from touching the plastic covering the light...Silly me. Do you think, to salvage these lights, I could make a sort of plexi spacer to prevent any critters from touching...and maybe venting it considerably around the lights to get some of that heat out of there? You obviously wouldn't be able to run the Heat Tape at the same time as the lights, but you could set it up on a timer to switch them on/off. We can not actually remove the lights (because of how he installed them evidently) with out damaging them (I'd prefer not to cut the cords of a $15 lighting unit). With the lighting how it is, the cages would be perfect for leopard geckos.

They cages are made from plywood, tileboard is lineing the interior. He wants to make them out of an expensive high-grade Oak plywood (which will then be sealed with polyurethane sp?). I'm afraid though, with the extra costs...No one would purchase them even though they would be SWEET. We're looking at making two lines though...One made with the higher-grade Oak, the other with the Melamine to give two different price options (they'll be 4 different options for the exterior look).

I had originally wanted to install flurescent lighting in, but couldn't seem to find any that wouldn't put the cost of these cages any higher (these prototypes I'm selling at cost because they were just an experiment and have a few minor flaws. $400 for the three of them). Once I figure out a way to protect the lighting (rather the animals that are in the cage), we'd be willing to deliver them within a 50 mile radius of Gettysburg, PA. We're considering shipping these units for interested parties...The shipping price would be really high though, I'm sure...

So let's see...We need to change...

- Doors to pull downs
- Lights to flurescents

I like making a single multi cage unit. Would anyone be interested in something like that??? Wireing heat would be so much easier that way...Less cords!

Question on the lights

Hey, just a quick question about the lights on this viv. What wattage were they? I'm putting finishing touches on my viv, and came across these 10 watt halogens at Lowes that look pretty sweet (plastic covers on them, too). An initial test shows they're okay, but ... I'll need a long-duration test to be sure.

j

Never mind; 10 watt halogens are still too much

The side of the light is 130+; the covered screen is too much for that. I wasn't actually burned handling the light, but ... far too hot for my babies. I'll have to find a mini-flourescent.

j

I did end up keeping this set. I added large vents in the back that helped dissipate heat...They're the perfect temperature for my Leos...

Lemme know if you would like to make a 4'x2'by1.5' boa cage. No installed heating just the cage. Cheaper version of course. What would something like that be?

I'd have to price everything again. It'd also be very expensive to ship, so you would have to more then likely pick up unless you're interested in paying an extra $50-100 for shipping.
