Czar has gone blue

Kilala

lemme go! I'm sleeping!
Now, I was away from home for a few days, so i don't know when he first went blue. I just got home yesterday and found him blue. I've heard that snakes sometimes don't eat before they shed, so i was happy to see him in blue. I had been worried, because he refused to eat before I left (and he's normally a great feeder, not picky at all! :eatpointe ). So this explains his little "hunger strike" :)

Can someone please explain this BLUE to me. lol sry if its a dumb question but still learing here. and wnats to know AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE before i get my corn next week.

That's when a snake is about to shed, and it's skin looks dull and it's eyes go a cloudy bluish color.

Wow, that's really nice. Looks like a milk snake (please correct me if I'm wrong, Nanci). But yea I can't wait for Czar to shed... I'm finally going to be able to determine "his" gender, using "the scale count method".

That's Zee. my Tri Color Hognose, also known as Pineapple- click the link in my signature to see the Pineapple video if you never have!

Scale count??

Nanci

Arrgh! Hognose! why didn't I see it? I must've only been looking at the color.
That makes me feel really stupid :headbang: ... I of all people should remember that most species in the pet trade come in a myriad of color morphs...

Scale count: Count the number of scales on the tail (from the vent down).
If you get a count of 140 or more, it's a male.
If you get a count of 130 or less, it's a female.
Remember, this only works for corns. For other species it's the same idea, but of course the numbers are different.

Here's the web page:

It usually is accurate. At least, a friend of mine (a hobby breeder) uses it A LOT and has about 99% accuracy with it. If the scale count falls between 140 and 130 then she probes them. She also probes them if she's going to breed them. It isn't completely foolproof, but it's a lot safer (not to mention easier!) than probing or popping.

Yeah, that is a kind of perfect shot of his nose!

Zee is a Tri-Color, Lystrophis pulcher. I didn't know about these for a long time, either. Then I had to have one! They are South American. Sometimes these guys are just black and white, sometimes just black and red, but it's because the other color gradually fades as the snake grows.

Western Hognoses, Heterodon nasicus, are found in the US. They probably have the most color morphs. They are for sure the most popular.

The Mexican Hognose, Heterodon n. kennerlyi is a subspecies, and the Southern Hognose, H. simus, is thought to be most closely related to the Western.

Eastern Hognoses, Heterodon platyrhinos, are not so closely related to the others.

A really pretty South American hoggy, Lystrophis dorbignyi, is just starting to be bred in captivity. I would really, really like to have one.

Thanks, Nanci... I'm still kicking myself over misidentifing Zee... Now that I've had some breakfeast (I slept in cuz im on vacation) it's really clear. Never again will I try to do that before I've had my coffee, lol.

Thanks for letting me know! I fixed it. It's probably because it's a Steve Irwin video. Better watch the fixed link while it still exists!!

Czar update: Czar and I just got done watching a movie together. He likes westerns too, lol. I guess it's kinda strange for a young woman to like westerns, but my dad and I always used to watch them when i was a kid... I guess they grew on me after all those years. Anyway, Czar likes to sit wrapped gently around my wrist and fingers when we watch tv together. He stays there, too... one time i accidently fell asleep for almost an hour! he was still there! Not that I would ever do that again, lol. I really hope that his scale count isn't between 130 and 140... then I won't be able to tell for sure if he's a male or female. On temperment though: I've heard that snakes get cranky when they're in blue, but he's as playful as ever. yes, I do mean playful, as in puppylike behavior. It's hard to describe...but there are some things he does that indicate this behavior, such as zooming arond and around a roll of tape.

Czar is having his name changed.. see my post "moral dilemma". He has gone clear today. about how far away is that shed?
