Dangerous Escape Attempts

I have a sliding lock screen and Simon tends to wedge himself in the little space that there is and try to pry it open. It ends in failure but he lands rather hard and that plastic is probably tougher than he is. I am very concerned for his well being. It isn't small tapping its like a medium bang from the plastic snapping back into place. This is only done when I am asleep, but I happened to wake up this time and find a very determined snake trying to open his screen door.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this behavior or at least keep him from causing harm to himself?

Babies love to get up in that space. Make sure the lid is securely locked. He'll quit when he gets too fa t to get up in there.

I always make sure it snaps shut, just had me worried with how violently the plastic would snap back into place. Would hate for him to get hurt. =/ Thank you for the help. ^^

My snake does that too. And shes about 3 and a half feet. Only my lid is one you lift instead of slide. She doesn't do it too often anymore, but I still sometimes catch her in the act. I just make sure to leave a good amount of open space where she does it so she falls onto the aspen instead of on a rock or hide.

I have gotten into the habit of getting a separate lid (one that goes straight up ahd down) and putting it over the sliding lid. Cant slide the lid open with both of them on. (snake can still wedge itself into the space between but not moce it enough for the thumping noises). But then I had one escape from a sliding lid tank. I SWEAR he teleported =).

No matter what you provide the snake with, they will ALWAYS look for an escape route, as long as you do not provide one that they can manage out of than you should be fine.

Your baby's just being a baby. He's curious and has lots of energy, which is just the way things should be. The best mindset for us as keepers is to assume that the snake's goal is to kill itself in some fashion, via escape attempts or within the viv. It's our job to prevent potential suicide. You're doing the right things.

Well i stuck a paper towel roll to the side just under his screen. He was in it last night and no problems last night. So I hope that has solved it.

I try to keep Simon's home full of interesting things for him to explore. Less chance of him getting in trouble, luckily he doesn't roam around too much at night. Mostly switching hides and drinking water. I switched out his aspen with carpet, he seems fine with it and I just love it because finding his poo is 10x easier than looking for it buried in aspen. He is still easily frightened and I've been bitten because of it. Doesn't hurt, but definitely surprising that the little guy will launch his attack. He most definitely has teeth, I am not looking forward to be bitten by him in the future if it does happen.

Some tape. I would've used those clear suction cups, but couldn't fine any.

He will find a way to get himself stuck to the tape, i would suggest removing the tape and clean the spots where the tape was attached very thoroughly. As long as you don't find a safe way for getting a hide up high i would suggest you don't :)
Hope i helped :D

Atmox is right. Tape is an accident waiting to happen, and it can do quite a lot of damage to a young ones. Somehow when I read about the paper towel roll I thought it was wedged into place. Your baby may go for ages without a problem, but then again he might not. You should remove that.

mkay, i'll look for another way to put it up. Any ideas?
He tried to burrow into his carpet this morning was rather hilarious. He couldn't seem to figure out that he couldn't go any further.

I agree. I've actually had this happen before and the baby was only a few months old. She's almost 3 years old now and still has scars up her belly from being stuck to and removed from some tape that was used in an inside corner of her cage. It was in a location where I figured no way in heck could she reach it... she did.
Maybe use some sort of wire to loop through it, which could hang or attach somewhere outside the cage?

If you can't wedge it into place, you might be able to tie it with raffia or yarn. Hot glue might be used to anchor it, also.

I used a toilet paper roll up high for my crestie (not anymore they fall apart due to the humidity)

I run a fishing wire trough the roll and secure both ends to a old pen. Now all you have to do is search for the right length you need for getting the hight you want, put the roll in, hold the pen in your hand when you close the lid and let loose the pen.

Now you wanna make sure the pen is as close to the lid as possible because the toilet paper roll is not heavy enough to pull it all the way down and it might spook the snake when he goes in and it becomes a mini elevator.
Also watch out where the snake is when you open the tube, and hold the pen when opening or he comes crashing down.

I will make on quickly and attach it to my feeding tube so you can see what i mean.

I wonder. Fishing line is thin and relatively "sharp" if enough force is applied. Would a snake manage to cut itself by rubbing against it or something? Might want to use a heavier gauge or softer string?
