delayed hatching

Hi, my corns have had eggs and they've lasted well, being plump and white for at least 12 weeks now.
The temp has remained stable at 80 and the vermiculite damp. The eggs show no signs of hatching and in fact, suddenly started to collapse. Is this normal and the 1st signs of hatching or is this a bad sign that something has gone seriously wrong ?
many thanks

Is it possible to upload some pix? (I'm sure you'll get better responses if folks can see what you're describing, though 12 weeks does sound like an extended time. Then again, I'm no expert. Got a clutch in the cooker going on 6 or 7 weeks and I have a hard time NOT checking daily to see if there's any sign of imminent pips breaking through, but don't know whether or not to attribute this to the fact that the female who laid them just laid a second clutch, or the fact that last year eggs were cracking on exactly the 45th day! Or maybe because I'm more anxious than a hooker in a cathedral? Don't know. But it's obvious, you can't go by me!!).

I hope your eggs are Ok.

That's a hair long maybe for that temp but reasonable. Eggs can start to sink in a few days before hatching occurs or it could be dehydration, would need a picture to say more surely which. But it's likely they are close to hatching, rather than dehydrated, given that they should be close to hatching.

Reasonable? OK, now you've piqued my interest and thanx for starting this thread there Eric! 12 weeks? So now I've GOT to begin a regimen of Xanax ASAP??!!

Does anyone know what the "typical" or "normal" time-frame is for cornsnake egg incubation? Just wanna get an idea so I don't keep checking inside the cooker daily, ya know? :boring: (Nanci recommended ventilation and fanning the eggs like every five days or so and I've discovered her recommendations to be fruitful in the past!)

Intensely curious! :dunce:

Hi Guys, thx for the replies, this is what the eggs look like today. As I've said, they've been fine until a week ago when they started to collapse.
she got a bit curious on shot two and came out to have a look what was going on :crazy02:

Just a little curious there briphcook: Do you keep your incubator INSIDE your snake's enclosure? (Pardon me if I'm misinterpreting something here as I am admittedly NOT the SHARPEST knife in the DISWASHER)!

I only ask because, if so, your little sneaky one can obviously and unintentionally crush those cylinders if left with them unsupervised. Also, shortly after they are laid, the embryo inside the egg will attach itself to one side of the egg and if tilted too much, it can unfortunately drown in the undeveloped surrounding fluids. As I mentioned, pardon any misinterpretation. :uhoh:

Those eggs actually look pretty good! Nice snakey also!!!! :crazy02:

The eggs are in with the female in their own tub with a lid on , I removed the lid to take the photo, so there's no chance she can squash them. I've not removed or turned them since they were laid and I know she's not disturbed them.

OK. I happen to do the same with Lilly and her clutches, though TWO incubators in there are a LITTLE cramped, but she has LOTS of space since I separated Bozo & Chili-Pepper from her. It's a 30" x 30" x 18" nylon (I think) screen meshed enclosure and both incubators are actually small-to-medium Tupperware containers full of sphagnum peat moss and are sealed to keep them safe from Lilly and also to keep heat & humidity inside. I rest them partially on top of the heat rock I have in there to ensure optimal heat & humidity and it appears to be working fine as the cheap Petco dial-type-meters indicate 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit and 80% humidity (not perfect but it works). I just didn't think anyone else was nutty enough to put an incubator inside a snake's enclosure, but it makes sense as long as it's sealed, no? Especially in my apartment, where my little sneaky ones are sealed away in their own separately dedicated room, which doubles as my office when I work from home and since the wifey is ophidiophobic (a real shame as she doesn't know what she's missing nor does she WANT to know, though she IS supportive enough to change their water when I'm away on business) and also to keep them and the kitties apart.

Seemed to me to be the obvious place as the temp is set and there's plenty of room (30*30*18) inside the enclosure. The male (Fang) was removed and she(Miami) has been quiet as a mouse.
Just at a loss why they've not hatched and why they are collapsing. ??

Hi guys, well they were indeed hatching eggs. Within 7. Days they had all hatched. They've now all shed and all but two are feeding :)

here you go...
