Deli Cups?

Rich, what do you do when a snake gets his tongue stuck on the outside of the cup? (just curious) snip, muah ah ah no more tongue?
 
So maybe it´s interesting how I keep my hatching?

That's how I keep mine now, but they always manage to tips over there water dishes, so that's way I am willing to take the hard route and get some stuff from the states.



Don't forget to order the lids for the deli cups. They are ordered separately from the deli cup bottoms.

Also, bear in mind that those deli cup liners are VERY thin and I wind up using 3 or 4 of them per deli cup

it´s impossible to turn that thing around! it´s 7cm from buttom left to top right. and the deli cup is 5.5cm high. but I use two water dishes together so it´s a bit more heavy for the snake to make me work :)
but anyway, there are enough other ways for a snake to make me clean her house...

Unfortunately, with a couple of thousand deli cups in racks, you rarely find the problem in time to do anything about it. Often the snake will pull the tongue completely out of it's mouth. Even if it is still attached, it will be dried and useless even if you unstick it.

Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often, otherwise I would have to abandon the use of the deli cups completely.

I guess I could use deli cups without the airholes in them.... :eek:

Does the snake die without it's tongue or will it grow another one?

I don't know of any animal that could regrow it's tongue... I'm guessing since the entire tongue is pulled out and dehydrated, the snake loses all use of it... Dunno if it kills the snake, but it certainly can't smell without its tongue, I'd imagine.
 
Don't they need their tongue to drink? Maybe not...but I thought so.

What is that used for holes, daniel? and why no clear cups? is it so they won't want to fight each other? lol

they think it´s less stress for the animals if they just have "one" window where all the time something is moving...this machine is for making holes into a belt. we call it hole pliers.

oh, here are the rules for shows...

Wow, thanks... that's strange. Are probes dangerous? Hmm...

And there was another about no hairless mice such as pinkies can be fed? Why not? Small snakes need the food more than older guys. You have a lot to deal with. Are you the Rich Z. of Germany? LOL ...or is there no demand?

No I´m not the german Rich Z. that would be definitiv too much work!!! And here in germany the demand is more or less not that big!

I´m not sure but I think you also had some rules like that for shows???
but anyway maybe it´s a bit more heavy here. for example, if someone in germany would keep all the animals in rack systems like you all do in the us...he could get into really big trouble if
you must keep a pair of adult corns in a rack like that:
150cm x 150cm x 75cm !!!
 
Hey Daniël (I think),

To be totally ok for the law, adult corns should be kept in cages with a minimum height of 1 meter here in Belgium...totally stupid, 50-60 cm should suffice very nicely !
 
While not wanting to take any business away from Rich Z, and by the way, I like the creative solution for a water source in an 8oz cup...I purchased 16 oz deli cups at a store called Smart & Final (50 for about 15 cents each including the lid). It allows a bit more space in the cup and makes it easier to keep the hatchling in when trying to replace the lid.

I bought plastic 1 oz cups (100 for $3) to use for water. the littlest ones spend some time in them just prior to their first shed. I also put a bit of spagnum moss in for a hiding place.

For my first attempt at caring for hatchlings, it's worked great so far.

Just wanted to add my own experience...

This is for anyone looking to manufacture their own PVC water bowls...

First off I am a woodworker by trade and I have access to every power tool and big peice of machinery imaginable.

So... This past Friday since business was slow I had some time to burn. I went out to Home Depot and purchased 40 1 Inch PVC end caps for .31 each. (Rich uses 3/4 end caps which run around .29 each) That's $12.40 so far...

I then proceed to pretty much mimic exactly how Rich makes his own bowls. I drilled them all with a 1/2 inch milling bit for the grooves on top, I slightly sanded the open end of the caps, Sanded the bottoms to take away the "bubble bottom" effect and then sanded away every and all burr's & sharp edges that might have been left after machining them.

All this took me 2 1/2hours (In 98 degree NY weather no less, ugh). This of course was a bargain for me since I didnt have to pay for my own labor. But if I had to factor in labor & the costs of materials I dont see how I could do them for less than what Rich charges. (And Im factoring in shipping which I can only imagine would be around $5 or so?)

Anyway... What does all this mean? Nothing.
I just wanted to share my experience with you all...

But when my workday was done I did go home and call Rich and express to him that in the future, Im just gonna order from him. :)
 
deli cups

Deli cups should be about 8-16 oz. in size. Neonates need small enclosures that provide security for them, also it enables the babies to more readily find their food. I personally use Shedd's Spread butter tubs (the large ones) for housing neonate corns, hogs, African house snakes, Pueblans, etc. and they work very well for the first 4-6 weeks of the animals life. Try it!:D

That's a lot of butter sandwiches! Especially, if you have more than one breeding pair of corn snakes.

Yes, a lot of butter sandwiches indeed! Seriously, I tell my students to bring me these. Being a teacher does have its pluses. A ton of butter no matter how you look at it, though!:D
