Hi everybody, what's the status on the dilute gene? Has it been isolated and introduced to non-anery like specimens yet?

Rob Stevens of Bayou Reptiles is the current "leader" with this particular morph. I know he's made several pairings to produce F1 hets, but I'm not sure how far he's gotten with the F2s. I know he has produced dilute ghosts and dilute anery stripes and normal patterned dilute anerys (there was a question about the dilute gene being connected to the motley one). Probably this season, we'll be hearing and seeing some results of mixing the dilute gene with other morphs.

So as far as we know for now, the dilute gene would be non-related to the motley mutation, but we still don't know if it's related to anery-like mutations. Sounds correct?
 
As far as I know, no one has proven out a non-anery dilute...yet. I have seen some photos of corns that sure could pass as dilute normals or dilute lavenders/hypo lavenders, but we shouldn't go on looks alone. The gene is also in Europe and possibly under a different name. If a breeder over there has proven it out yet in non-anerys, I couldn't say.
 
You mentioned he made alot of pairings to get F1 hets, do you know if it worked? Has he proved it to be recessive? Thanks again for the input. :)

I believe it has been proven to be simple recessive but again, Rob is the guy to talk to on that one. I have produced what I would consider a dilute normal but the animal died shortly after hatching so there is always a chance it was a weird light color because of something else. And no...I don't have pictures.....just didn't think of it that soon and well....it was too late by the time I remembered my camera. I've had the dilute gene pop up in my lava motley project and have produced dilute anery motleys and what I belive to be a dilute anery and in the next couple of years I should be able to see if it works with normal motley and lava.

I would LOVE to see a dilute lava and a dilute ice! The blending of the color schemes of those genes is literally mind-boggling!

Regarding your unusually light animal, do you remember if the light coloration seemed associated specifically to reduced melanins or do you think the mutation was affecting dispersion (or production) of the red/orange pigments?

Dilute with Lava must be quite outstanding...

Ah....couldn't tell you. It was 2 years ago and I don't remember much about it except for it was light colored. The dilute thing wasn't really known back then so I didn't think a whole lot about it anyway.

Well, I guess more breeding trails are in order! Looks like another one of those fun what the heck is going on projects.
 
Does the Dilute gene have been tested with the other genes who reduce melanin (such as hypo, sunkissed, lava, ultra)? How can we tell that Dilute is not a form of hypomelanism that is already known?

It still needs to be officially tested with some of the hypo genes, I think, but it has already been basically tested against hypo A and found to be different. It also doesn't have the look of Sunkissed, nor do they look like ice or ultra anerys.
 
I agree that don't look like the other "hypo anery" types we already know.

I think it would be wise to first isolate the mutation before testing it's compatibility to others. A few "het to het" clutch interpretation from a "wild type x dilute anery (non motley)" pairing would be my choice to first see if the dilute mutation is actually independent from anerythrism. If you can't separate it from anery, then you know it's not just another form of an already known hypo type.
 
Lets see what sort of pairings Rob has planned for this year and what he hatches out since he is further along than any other breeder I know of at the moment.
 
Thanks Susan for this information. I agree with JFDéry. I'm surprised that a new gene has been attributed to this mutation whereas the dilute mutation has not already been separated from Anery! I'm eager to see pictures of the first Dilute (without nothing else)...
 
My dilute anery bred an anery motley last night so now I'm looking for a normal to put him with....didn't realize he would be ready to go as he was not brumated but I thought I'd try just for the heck of it.
 
OMG, My head hurts! I don't think I will EVER get any of this gene talk. Sorry guys I've been reading and REALLY have been trying to get it all but for now I'll stick with Normals, to me that's a safe bet!......LOL
