They have to be picking up on something. In the wild their smell is very acute, has to be in order to locate a mouse or the opposite sex. While we may not smell our actual scent (we smell our odors, cologne, perfume, sweat) the snakes should be able to pick up our chemical scent. While shedding is a growth process it could also be triggered by chemicals. Younger men and women may give off stronger scents of the hormonal cycle. My snakes sheds are scattered and that may be because I no longer have a monthly and my hormonal cycles are not as strong as a woman half my age.
