Imagine my excitement when coming back to my house this morning I spot a snake by the edge of the road. When I ran back to check it out, I was dismayed to find a beautiful cornsnake that had been run over. It was over 3 ft. and most likely it was deliberately killed. It was very close to the edge of the road and you can see how close the tires came to the edge to run it over. What a shame. A very pretty normal colored animal. I've been here a little over a month now and haven't found anything more than anoles, an Eft and a glass lizard. I found the remains of a snake in my backyard, but no others. I'm so sad that the one wild corn that I've found was killed.

I was out road cruising one night and got stuck behind another car.
I wasn't too worried, though because I was about to turn off onto a seldom used road and figured the other car would continue on.
Well about a half mile before the turnoff I see a nice large snake in the other vehicle's head lights.
It was just comming accross the road from the other lane.
I was getting ready to pull over and see what we had when the idiot in front of me swerved all the way over to the other side of the road to kill the snake.
When I pulled over it was a beautiful large corn at least five foot long.....dead of course
face it.....people can be idiots.
I'm sure this person was so proud that they had just killed this dangerous "copperhead" crossing the road.
 
I guess. It's just so sad to see it. Why do people have to be so stupid!? I don't think they care whether or not it's poisonous, just so long as a snake is dead!
 
I'm constantly amazed at how many people still think that all snakes are "poisonous." I recently posted photos of all my snakes on my blog and one person left this comment:

"Do your snakes bite? If so, wouldn't there be some sort of poison in the bite? "

She didn't mean it facetiously, and I took it as an opportunity to educate her.
 
Corns are the most common road kill snake I see- and Corals. And Glass Lizards. I'm sorry- I hate seeing them, too...

I really hate the fact that there are people are so stupid to go out of thier way to kill a living creature. I feel bad when any creature is killed needlessly. Especially snakes. Because I <3 them.

Meg, I'm sorry that the first wild corn that you got to see was dead. I'm not even half as lucky as you, though. Being in southern California, you don't see too many wild anything here. Only possums sometimes. And the last one I saw was dead. :( Supposedly of west nile, but I didn't believe it. :rolleyes:
 
I actually found more snakes in So. Cal than I have here. Gophers, racers, and rattlesnakes pretty often. Even a garter snake once.
The only thing I've found here so far are some anoles, a glass lizard and an Eft. The only snakes have been dead. One in my yard that accidently got brush hogged by the people who owned the place and this one.
 
Really? Wow. The "wildlife" around my area consists of dogs, cats, rats, possums, and the like.

Of course, I'm sure it would be different if I could actually get into some more rural areas every once in a while, but with the parents and little brother against it, and no driver's license of my own, that's probably a couple of years off.
 
Sorry to hear that, I have searched South Texas for Mexican Milk Snakes and Mexican Hog-Nosed Snakes. I have found one of each. The Milk was a DOR, beautiful, but about 12 hours to late. The Hog-Nose, was alive, but on State Owned property and I had to release it. I fell your pain.
 
I didn't live in a real rural area. The one gopher snake I found was crossing the street by some apartments. I found rattlesnakes up at the barn along with the racers and other gophers so you only have to be moderately in "rural" areas. As long as there's hills or sandy washes, you'll find them.
 
What a shame on those people, but at least they could possibly think it's a venomous snake (not that that's any excuse), I've seen slowworms here that have been stomped on or beheaded by morons, the mentality of killing an animal in that way is beyond me.
But now I'm going to be waiting to see your first wc corn!
 
At least I know they are around. As far as venomous or not, I don't think people know the difference. At least in California, if it didn't have a rattle it was non-venomous. Around here, there's all sorts that don't have rattles as well as one's with! Most people think snake's are dangerous anyway. I wish they could all be educated!
 
Bummer on the road kill.

But don't worry...you'll find plenty of snakes in Aiken. I used to work at SRS and there are snakes all over that place. Aiken is a hot-spot for a lot of snakes.
 
The only wild snake I've ever seen around here was one I had to rescue because some morons were throwing rocks at it.

Why people can't just let other creatures go about their lives in peace is beyond me.
 
Oh I know! Aiken is a reptile paradise! That's why I was so excited to move here. Hopefully come spring I'll see more. If I can, I'm hoping Whit Gibbons will give me a tour of the SREL to see the stuff there. I also have a guy around the corner who used to run the SC herp society. I'd like to get out in the field with some of these experienced herpers.
 
Whit is a blast! If you get to go herping you'll love it! He was my pseudo-adviser for my summer intern at SREL. Great guy! Great lab.
 
Maybe you could put in a good word Jeff! I hate bugging the guy about it all the time...but I really want to get over there.
 
I know this is a late add to this, but I can tell you the attitude about ANY kind of snake seems to be universal. I live in VERY rural southern Ohio where the local vet keeeps a cotton in formaldehyde (sp?) just to teach what snakes to beware of(note I said beware, not grab the shovel). Even then, if you don't know what you are doing, just leave the guy alone! You are most likely invading his space, not the other way around! I was once lucky enough to spot a big beautiful cotton on(more like in the middle of) a backroad not long ago. With headlights on I stopped 20 ft. away from him to see he got across safely and got a neat pic on my cell phone to boot! When showing off my cool pic, I was told by a local, "the only good snake is a dead one" and he added that I should have run it down. My response was that poisonous or not, they were here before we were, and I hoped he lives a long happy life! (as long as he doesn't eat my cat, lol)
 
When my kids were little thier dad and I would take them to the Upper peninsula of michigan every summer for vacation. Of course they were ALWAYS out lookin for snakes, turtles, frogs, whatever critters they could catch. One summer we were getting firewood for camp and came across this tiny black snake with the brightest red belly. It was extremely calm, so I told the kids they could take it back with us, figuring it was a baby of some sort. When we got back home I went on the internet to look up Michigan snakes and found out it was a red-bellied snake, which only ate worms, slugs and snails. My husband (at the time) was heading back up there in 3 weeks for fishing so I told the kids he would bring her back where we found her and let her go. A week after we brought her home, I looked into her cage and found what looked like 9 little worms.....THEY WERE BABIES!..lol well my kids thought that was awesome and hoped thier dad was leaving sooner so we could send mom and babies home where they belonged.
 
I live in a place that only has Adders ( >.<; ) and grass snakes.
Oh and I think we have a few water snakes and slow worms, but nothing as beautiful as a Corn in the wild.
