DIY Sculpey Hides

Last night my husband and I sat down with some left over sculpey clay from my school and decided to make our own hides. We didn't like anything at the store, and the.hides.that came with our tanks.are meant for geckos. As it is our snakes have.just been using the cardboard corner packaging from the tank (which they love). As son as we figure out a safe paint we are going to paint them.

My husbands is the one with the mushrooms and mine is the one without.

Very nice! Any paint that is food safe should work, but you might need to prime the surface before painting; depending on the surface left on the clay when it dries, paint may not stick well.

Thankfully paint sticks pretty well to sculpey. I had to do a character model with it and painted it and had no issues with paint holding well. It has a slightly rough texture wwhile still being smooth which seems to hold paint pretty well.

Oh so awesome!! I realllly love those, I wish I was as artistic! Our kids have the same modelling clay for school projects, how long do you bake it?

They look great, can't wait to see when they are finished and in the viv's!!

Super cool!! You could paint them with whatever kind of craft paint you normal use and then seal them really well (a couple, few coats?) with this. It says it can be used on kitchen counters, and we all know sometimes a plate just isn't in the cards lol, so it must be non toxic when dry.

So good! They are beautiful, where can one obtain "sculpty clay" that I am sure will be safe?

Scupley is an actual brand name. You can get it at most craft stores, most notably Michael's. The Sculpey brand is a bit expensive, there's other off brands of the same type of clay. Most baking clays should be the same. Almost all clays I can think of are pretty safe... just remember if you paint it, you're gonna wanna coat it with a proper sealant.

Those hides are incredible! We've got some hides made with sculpy clay, but we just used a couple of small dishes to form the clay over. Never thought about something like what you've done!

Thanks :) we have to hit up the store this weekend for sealant and sometime next week we will get to put them in our give. We used armature wire make the shape of the hides. For the rocks and mushrooms we used foil to make the shape and then wrapped.and smoothed.the clay around it to cut back on cook time.

Are the wire and foil still inside the clay? I'm trying to form a visual of what you said you did, but my brain isn't cooperating, lol.

Yes. The wire and foil bake inside the clay and stay there. Sculpey dries as a hard plastic and you can't see or feel it as long as you cover all sides of the wire/foil.

Ah neat, I never would have thought to do that. One last question, did you use original sculpey or super sculpey? Do you know if one is better than the other? Oop's that was two questions lol, well I might as well throw another one in as long as I'm on a roll. Is sculpey III any good? My kids would love the colors. Thank you!!!

I used just the regular sculpey since it was what we had but I would think they would all work. I'm going to be experimenting with more soon to try out some more hides.so if the colored ones are any good I might try it. The original is sort of a flesh tone.
One nice thing about it is that it stays soft until you bake it. Mine was stored in an unsealed cardboard box and never dried out.

They look incredible! I stocked up on $100 on sculpey clay from Micheals for school projects, the kids and I will now be doing a weekend snake hide craft day! :)
