do snakes yawn?

So i was doing my nightly routine of picking up Leonard and letting him stretch his legs while getting used to me. He seems to be putting up with my presence more but is obviously more curious about slithering all around my room than on me. He has never bite me or striked at me but tonight i was holding a stick that he was sort of stretched out on. He had already been out for a bit and all of sudden he opened his mouth really wide but never took a strike at me or even really moved. It kind of scared me so i just grabbed the stick and put Leonard back in his viv. Was this a sign of hey back off? or do snakes yawn?

They do that occasionally. It looks like yawning, but I don't think that's really what it is. I think they usually do it to reset their jaw. Nothing to be worried about! I think it's pretty cute.

They do yawn.... and I never seem to be able to get my camera quick enough to catch them when they do!

LOL! I've seen my girl both yawning and resetting her jaw (most notably with her first few fuzzies...maybe I'll see a few good ones when I move her up again after she sheds). It is arguably one of the cutest things I've seen her do, but it has to contend with her popping up from burrowing with little mounds of eco-earth on the flat of her head. She's so quiet and such a smooth mover that it can stick around up there for quite a while! Both behaviors are disgustingly, shamelessly adorable.

But yeah, yawning is normal. If you start seeing a lot of yawning, where it's no longer an isolated incident, it can be indicative of respiratory issues (such as a respiratory infection). But the occasional yawn is just cute, and completely harmless. Just enjoy the view. :)

thank you so much! i was just scare that maybe Leonard was being hostile in some way? Because it felt like we had a good holding session last night. In the future I will think of his mouth opening as adorable :)
