Corn Snake Friendly
Hey everyone,

I was just wondering to breed and sale corn snakes do you have to have a Business liciense? I'm really not sure. Especially if you are working out of your home and not a actual business? Any comments and info on this would be appreciated...thanks so much :crazy02:

I think individual states have their own laws. Here in Florida, it's like $5 if you sell less than 10 snakes per year and $25 to sell more. I haven't checked this out in a while, but I don't think it requires a business licence.

Florida requires a state licanse to sell and exhibit wildlife...corns fall into the Class III catagory...and it is $50 per year. I also have a county issued business license for $15 a year plus have registered the ficticious name for my business, which I think is $15 for 5 years. I have to "charge" and pay sales tax on any snakes I sell to people in Florida. But I also fill out a Schedule C with my federal income taxes...the loss is great for getting a decent refund. I did show a small profit one year and hope to be able to again soon...just to keep the IRS happy. I do all this just to prevent any potential problems....always best to cover your behind in this day and age.

Great post Susan!

Remember, there are lots of different government departments with their hand out. Not only the ones that Susan stated, but if you are in the city limits, they may also require an occupational permit.

If you are very small and sell only a few litters per year, you may go under the radar, especially if you just sell mostly wholesale to a dealer instead of individually. But be really careful as running afoul of all of these agencies can cost a lot if they catch you.

You are supposed to report all earnings, no matter how small, to the IRS and on your state income tax too. But you can deduct all of your expenses, including feed, electricity, mileage for picking up supplies, going to shows, etc, so you may not show any profit at all. You might want to talk to an accountant about it.

I started a thread last Spring, and got some valuable information in addition to what has already been stated here. I purchased my tax id number and business name last Spring, and paid my state and local sales tax along with income taxes. A bit more work, but worth it in the end feeling 'legit', and not having to worry about who's knocking on the door.
Here's the thread I had started last Spring:
