Just wondering really, Most places say to treat water to get rid of the chlorine. Although, the two reptile shops ive been in i've asked and they both say they use tap water.

I know that my local tap water has quite alot of chlorine, and alot of sites say this can harm or even eventually kill your snake. So just wondering, Is there much evidence that supports this?

I've been boiling and letting the water cool down before putting it into the bowl most times. But just trying to figure out whether i should invest in some form of treatment aswell!.
 
If you're particularly worried about your tap water, let it sit out for about 24 hours before giving it to your snake. Chlorine dissipates over time. The longer you let it sit out, the less chlorine in the water.
 
Straight from the tap for my snakes, for a long time. RO water for my dart frogs since they absorb water thru the skin.
 
I use reverse osmosis (RO) water for everything including my plants. I add grapefruit seed extract to the water for my snakes and lizards.

Grapefruit seed extract... interesting ... what gave you that idea? It boosts their immune system right?

From what I understood (it's been a few years since actually hunting down the information) it helps keep fungus and bacteria from the water as well as aiding in the gut load of the snake. :shrugs: By now, it's something I've always done, and is part of my repertoire.

You can get grapefruit seed extract from health-food shops, it lasts for ages because you dilute it so much. I put a drop or 2 into a 2 litre bottle and shake it up, I use it about every 2 weeks or so, with plain 'council pop' the rest of the time
 
To save you time, boiling water doesn't remove chlorine or any minerals. It only kills microbes that shouldn't be present unless you have a boil advisory. Reverse osmosis or distilling the water will purify it but it seems easier just to treat the water.
 
I use sparkling water with a little crystal light. I used to use cool aid but was concerned they were getting too much sugar. Sometimes I come in the room and I’d have snakes bouncing off the walls. No more sugar for those boys. On hot days I will add ice in the afternoon.

On special days like Thanks Giving, I like to give them a nice Chardonnay. Strictly domestic stuff. I’m not nuts or anything. I keep the good stuff for my lizards

I would have to disagree on this minor point. Unless I'm forgetting my chemistry, boiling water increases the temperature as well as the surface area, this in turn increases evaporation. Evaporation is how the chlorine is removed from standing bucket of water, so it would seem that boiling water would evaporate the chlorine faster as well. :shrugs:

I use a water filter jug kept in the fridge, can't stand the taste of our tap water, for all drinking water in our house and that includes the corns. I fill their water bowls and leave it to stand, allowing it to reach room temp before putting it in their tanks.
 
I use filtered water for all my animals and myself. I have a system attached to my kitchen sink lines. Don't even have to press a button, filtered water right out of the tap.
 
I agree with these folks, tap water is not good for baby snakes. Some use it and say its no problem but like my grandfather smoked till he died at 96 but that didn't mean that smoking is good for you. Filtered water you can get at the store or get a filtration system you will love the water too.
Saying this, never use distilled water the snakes and other reptiles need the minerals.
