Does anyone own a Nicaraguan Boa?

Jenstar

IN OVER MY HEAD ;)
I wanted to know if any one owned a Nicaraguan boa? I also wanted to know what you thought of there personalities? And if you have pics feel free to post them... :) The ones I've seen are really beautiful...

Have heard that Nics can be nippy and, by the same token, have heard of their having great temperaments.
I believe it depends on the individual Nic ... &/or other factors could come into play as well (i.e. age, WC vs. CB, handling, environment, etc.).
I only have one very young pair, at the moment, and really love them. They (my pair) have the ~sweetest~ temperaments.:)

I have a pair of unsexed '08's and they are the spawns of Satan! Their defensive biting even makes them difficult to feed! I bought them for $50 each and have dropped their price from $120 to $100 to $75 to now $50! No one wants them because they are so bad to strike the cage when anyone looks at them! I think I'll probe them and post them up for sale soon. If I had more time, I'd like to work with them and see what it would take to calm them down.

Chip,

Isn't that what that guy tried to steal from your shop? When I read this the first time I was thinking you had one :D

We believe Fluffy may be one. He is either that or a Mexican Desert Boa.
Sweet is not a word we would describe him

I have a rescued '04 nic boa and he is just a big sweety. He still needs some work on handling, he is still squirmy sometimes but he has never shown any signs of being aggresive at all. He has only hissed at me once and that was cause I got to close to him while he was eating (my mouse, back off)lol. I just love him, he is beautiful and the perfect size for me. Here are some pics of him.

I have a pair! :D

The female was really nippy when I first got her, but after regular handling she has been great. Now, a short time ago she got nippy again but I think it was due to the season and cage size change.
The male has never been nippy and is a real sweetheart. Baby Nics can be very aggressive, but just like any boa, I think handling can calm the beast. Except Fluffy, see above pics. LOL IMO Nics aren't as popular as other boas due to their smaller size, lack of color morphs and the well known nippyness. Guys want BIG boas, not ones that only get 4-5 feet. My pair are over a year old and compared to my other boas the same age, are considerably smaller. But I love the dwarf boas.

Thankyou everyone for posting... I was asking because I love the larger boas, but they are just too big. So I found these guys that stay a lot smaller and are still very beautiful and was just curious what they are like. I don't want to run out and buy a snake and find it's the seed of satan. :) From the sounds of it I have a 50/50 chance of getting a nice one. I'll keep my fingers crossed if I decide to get one. Thanks again.

Are you trying to find a smaller boa that looks like a red tail? Because if you don't mind lighter colors, you could always try Hogg and Corn Isle boas.

By the way, the pictures you posted are awesome. All of your snakes with the exception of Fluffy make me like them even more. They are so pretty. :)

Yah I'm looking for a smaller boa that's enclosure won't take up half of my room... :) I'll have to look into those types of boas as well.

Does anyone know a good breeder of dwarf or smaller Boas?

Can we see pics?

I want to see them too. :) I can definetly handle grumpy boas if I can handle my grumpy 10 inch cornsnake. ;)

IME... Devil Boa = Nic's

aww didnt you get to see my nic. when I brought him into the store to find out what he was lol. He was in blue and still being a good boy and he had a rough life before me. They can't all be bad. I guess I got really lucky.

If you EVER WANT to test that Theory come over and handle Fluffy. Seriously, never confuse a Pissed off Boa to a miffed Corn. I have been bitten by both, apples and oranges.
by the way, this isn't Fluffy, this is by a nice boa.

GREAT photo, Trick!
Chip,

Isn't that what that guy tried to steal from your shop? When I read this the first time I was thinking you had one :D

Yep, he stole one of the (two) wrong snakes! These guys bite and hold on. A rare getula king or Asian rat is the only other thing I've ever seen do this. I've never had a camera close when I've been tagged, but wish I had -even as little ones they bring blood and don't let go until I run cold water on them. And then they usually let go only to latch on to another spot! I have started working with them with gloves, just to insure their teeth stay intact.
I have a couple of photos, but none are decent. I'll try to remember to take some fresh shots in the next few days.
I'd seriously sell these at a loss if they went to the right home. But they need a LOT of work to be "normal" snakes. Clay Davenport told me that they tend to grow out of the "ill" phase, but these two have much, much farther to go than an average "nippy" boa. They hiss and strike audibly while I'm checking other snake's water bowls, etc.!
