The funny thing is, Science Diet is supposed to be great stuff, blah, blah, blah, the only reason so many vet clinics sell it is that the reps push it like crazy (I worked in a vet clinic for 4 years) but if you look at the ingrediant list, the first 3-4 isn't even meat. You are shelling out a TON of money for rep pushing power. I also have a friend who just graduated from vet school and is into holistic food like me. She said that vets do not get any nutrition classes in school, so all they know is what the reps come and tell them, soooo, the pushiest rep sells the most food.
you hit the nail on the head with that one, science diet and most other "brand" foods are complete and utter crap. and really, how many of us knew that vets aren't even trained in nutrition!? that's CRAZY!!! a healthy pet starts with healthy food, so it blows my mind that the vets aren't trained in it. the reason i know this is because i work in a pet food store and we don't even CARRY any food with corn or wheat or any of that "bad" stuff, we're all holistic. yes, it's a bit more expensive in the long run but it's a lot cheaper than paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars at the vet to get your pet allergy tested, and only have them tell you that you need to buy their special vet food, which will probably run you about $25 for 4lbs.
personally i think RAW is the way to go, but there have been a few good brand suggestions already. california natural, taste of the wild, horizon (not sure if Horizon has made it down to the states or not, it's made in alberta). basically just go into a holistic pet store, and ask the people there. they should help you choose a good food for your pet, and your budget. also, it really is common sense. to tell if a food is good of not? just read the first 4-6 ingredients. if you see any corn, gluten, wheat, bi-products, etc it's more than likely crap. if it's first few ingredients are meat and meat meal, then you're good to go!
