Dog question

I will be getting a urine sample but so far she does not enjoy being followed when she is trying to pee, lol. I figure if I keep following her I will eventually get it.

Her urination is normally frequent and small amounts. It seems like she goes out every 30 minutes to an hour if not more frequent.

I wouldn't consider putting her to sleep yet she still wags her tail, chases the cats, eats well and plays and only seems to be having problems getting up sometimes and walking down stairs which seems normal since she is old.

It really isn't my choice it's up to my mom but if I get a urine sample she agreed to that. So we are going to try the urine test and see what that turns up then we will go from there and talk about other options if nothing shows up.

OK, does your vet have technicians to hold the animals for him/her? And would your dog be better away from you? I ask this because some dogs are that way. I've been a certified veterinary technician for over 25 years and have dealt with every personality of dog (and owner) there is. I also think that simply based upon your description of the symptoms, your vet should have started her on antibiotics for a UTI. I know the vet I work for would have done that. 9 times out of 10, he doesn't even want a urine sample as it is often just a waste of the owner's money. If a round of antibiotics doesn't cure the problem, or the problem returns, then he'll go for a urinalysis and/or other tests, like an X-ray to see if bladder stones are present. In all honesty, I would look for another vet if the one you're currently using won't treat your dog without a urine sample to verify an infection. Just my professional opinion.
 
And a helpful hint for catching that urine sample from the shy dog...the aluminum pie tin is an excellent choice, but attaching it to a straightened out wire hanger so you don't have to actually bend down underneath to get at the urine, often getting it on your hand, and making the dog jump/stop or run away, is often a blessing.

Well the vet called and said she had a raging infection and needed antibiotics. When we picked up the meds he was not there so he is going to call us back. She is on Baytril and I'm guessing it's a urinary tract infection, so thankfully it was nothing to serious.

I still don't understand WHY he wouldn't do a simple UTI test in the beginning? Can you ask him? I kinda of want to know.

I'm not sure why he wouldn't either, but the vet that saw her the first time isn't the one who did her test this time but if I see him I'll ask.
 
I'm glad to know it was a urinary infection and nothing more. Like others I'm not understanding why the vet wouldn't have suggested the urine test to begin with. The signs your baby were exhibiting were definately telltale signs of a UTI.
Good luck with your baby and I hope everything goes well with her from here on out.
 
I find it shocking he didn't just prescribe some antibiotics to begin with and just tell you to come back if it continued... That's what the vet did when my boston mix got an infection, and it saved us $30 or so for a urine test... Strange. But then, I've only dealt with one UTI (vet called his a bladder infection, I assume they're the same?) so far with my animals, so I guess I wouldn't really know the routine...

Good luck with that nasty little UTI of hers... I'm sure it'll be gone in no time. =)
 
Yea I don't know what his logic was for not testing her but it was very obvious something wasn't right so I decided to have her tested and started the meds tonight so hopefully they will help and she'll feel better.
