Eating my Finger?

Fluke

New member
I looked through older topics and couldn't really find something identical to my problem, so I figured I might as well ask.
Sunday I picked up a really lovely little Snow. She is a little small for her age (in comparison to our other babies) and I noticed on her cup that it looked like she had last fed on October 10th :uhoh: So we fed her almost right off and she took very well to it.

Today I was handling her so I could apply some neosporin to her head (she got what looked like a tiny abrasion from an excursion around the top of her cage) she took to it really well and handled fine until she started literally trying to eat my fingers (possibly the ones with neosporin on them???) She wasn't striking, she was actually opening her mouth the way she does to eat a pinkie and trying to nibble on my finger!

Is this something babies sometimes just do? She was fed only three days ago, so she shouldn't be due for another pinkie quite yet, but does this mean she is hungry?

I figured since she hadn't been fed for so long maybe she might need a more aggressive feeding schedule? (Nothing too aggressive, just maybe eating every 3-4 days instead of 4-5.)

What do you all think?

Sounds like a hunger response bite. But I wouldn't feed her any sooner than her normal schedule. Some adults do that, too. My tri-color hoggy went through a phase of it.

Never had that problem :uhoh:

It's less cute when a 2,5 meter Elaphe Taeniura ssp tries to do it. :eek1:

I would rather choose to feed more then quicker. Give their digestive system some time.

I think it will probably grow out of it. If it does it just let it as it will soon realise you are not food and then will leave you alone.

Quite a bit ago, another member showed me a pic where almost his entire finger was being swallowed...

I wish I could remember who it was! Anyone know?

I think you're talking about this pic.
Sorry I don't remember either who that finger owner was...:)

Just to weigh in again, she has not done this since but I have found out some startling things about her.
Shri (the snow in question) was hatched early Sept. Our Okeetees were hatched mid Sept. Shri weighs 6-7 g D: and the Okeetees both weigh between 12-14. She is absolutely tiny. We have not been feeding her more frequently, and we're afraid she's too small to feed anything bigger (she is really very skinny.) She does eat well though, so that isn't a problem. She's just very small.

Give her time she should grow diffrent snakes grow at diffrent speeds you should be fine feeding her every 4 days she isn't goin to die of hunger on a diet like that and will grow up nice and big for you!

That picture looks like it could hurt. Either the finger or the snake, I can't tell which would be worse. I know I wouldn't like it if I shoved something down my throat, and then someone grabbed me by the head to take it out.

Anyways, mine only bit me once, and it was because I was being stupid. I bought mine as an adult and he did latch on to my finger to eat me, however I was so startled that I ripped him off.

It happened pretty fast, and really I'm just thankful the snake didn't get hurt.
