Hey guys, are there any other ebay sellers or buyers on here? If so, are you participating in the strike on ebay. Ebay has just went stupid and is raising its final value fees and also taking away the sellers rights to report bad buyers. And will only show negative feedback that sellers recieve. Also if you are a smaller seller or are new paypal can hold your money for up to 21 days. We can't let ebay take away our rights like this. There will be a strike from the 18th to the 25 where sellers are not selling and buyers are urged not to buy to get their point across to ebay. A lot of sellers are leaving ebay for other auction sites. Is there any of you on this site who are participating?
Just curious...

Actually, Ebay became stupid a long long time ago. They've consistently upped their fees almost on a yearly basis now and the whole feedback system as it is now has never worked as many sellers have often used it as a means for feedback hostage garbage. I've been a very frequent ebay user since 2000 and I've had over 1000 successful transactions and yet I only have over 700 feedbacks. Why? Because sellers won't initiate feedback to a buyer (who usually completes the transaction first) until after they get feedback. The problem with this is, if the seller screws the buyer and the buyer leaves a legitimate feedback, then guess what, the seller leaves a bad feedback to the buyer who paid for something they didn't get. I know I know, there are bad buyers out there too! I know all about the scams buyers pull as I have done my share of selling on ebay. The truth is, the problem there lies in paypal, not ebay. Ebay actually has little to do with any problems with most transactions, instead, if the money transaction was done through paypal, ebay simply passes the problem into paypal's lap (whom ebay owns anyways) and let's them deal (read ignore) the problem. Unfortunately, there is no real easy solution, but I believe that the system should require that the seller has 2 weeks after the auction ends to leave appropriate feedback for a buyer (which is about how long it should take to have made a payment) and then the buyer can leave feedback for up to 2 months for the seller (since some overseas items can literally take months to arrive at their destination). I think this is the fairest way, that way everybody still has the ability to leave feedback and it reduces the feedback hostage problems. But Ebay is stupid and their actions are usually more drastic than logical.

We can't let ebay take away our rights like this.
I will say however, this remark leaves me scratching my head something terrible. What rights does Ebay owe you for using their site? Your rights are what they tell you they are and that's ultimately their business. You don't like it, you go somewhere else. I do get awfully tired of people complaining about Ebay's policies while they continue to use Ebay because "there's nothing else out there". Well, guess what? There are other options out there although none are currently as popular nor widely used, but they are out there! And what did people do before Ebay even existed anyways? The bottom line is, whether you like Ebay's policies or not, it's their business and they can do whatever they want to with it. You basically have no rights when it comes to their business model! And this is why I quit selling on Ebay years ago. I don't agree with their rules, I take my business elsewhere. Plain and simple :)

Hadn't heard about this until now. I use Ebay all the time for both selling and buying and have yet to have any complaints.

DeadMouse makes a good point, Ebay are offering us a service and nobody forces us to use it. :shrugs: To be honest I can't see much point anyone getting worked up over it. Ebay aren't stealing your money; they only get the fees if you list an item!

I heard about this but not about the strike. Acutally, I kinda like the fact they are changing some of the structure. Yeah, it sucks to pay more in final value fees but I like the reduced insertion fee and the FREE gallery picture. So...you save some money and you lose some money. I'm not that mad so I think I'll be walking through the picket lines! :dancer:

Yep...sucks when the buyers wait. I've had sellers send out crappy merchandise (one time a 'complete' magazine set missing 14 issues!) and then I try to work with them to resolve it and they want nothing to do with it. So finally, after exhausting all my options--including the paypal process which seems to default to sellers--I leave negative feedback.....and Whamo! They hit me with neg too! Bummer.

eBay's been rubbish for years, Has outgrown itself and lost sight of the reason it was started in the first place.

The good thing about the internet however, Is it is constantly evolving. When one website/organisation gets too greedy and starts to alienate its users another will always be there to step into its place.

I hate ebay, but you are confusing Rights with privileges and/or good customer service/relations. You have no RIGHTS to low fees when using a privately owned company. You have no RIGHTS to any specific feedback methods, etc. I don't disagree that eBay sucks, but it is THEIR RIGHT to suck as a private company. It is your right to use them or not, but you have ZERO rights to use them under rules YOU like and not the rules THEY like......lol.

I wish the strike would work, but this won't even cause a bump in their quarterly profits. A week strike? You don't strike for a week and then start selling and buying to make up for the lost time. You strike UNTIL they change their rules. You LEAVE and bring your business elsewhere until they provide a service you are willing to use. A "lets not buy from them for a week to show them we are mad" means eBay learns they can do just about whatever they want and the worst that happens is a SLOW week. No lost sleep there, I bet!

If you are that against their new rules, cancel your account and take your business elsewhere. I already use eBay and PayPal as little as I "have" to because I hate some of their OTHER policies - ones that have been in place that you didn't even mention. ....but MONEY does talk. If it saves me money (or makes me money), then I will use them when it is pretty much unavoidable. It isn't a strike or a ban, but it is a large limit to how much business I do with them - and that will not change until they change their policies! Since they are in kalifornia, I don't think they will ever change the things I do NOT like about them.......lol.

WEll I have been selling on their for awhile but am closing my shops doors during the strike and checking out other options. Yes I agree I worded the taking our rights away sentance wrong, srry. It is unfair to good sellers to not be able to leave bad feedback for bad buyers. I personally leave feedback for every buyer that buys from me. I dont recieve feedback from all buyers though. Also they are changing it to where paypal will be able to hold your money for up to 21 days before you have access to it. I think it is time that we let ebay know they are not the only place to buy and sell at. THey ahve gotten too big and dont care. Yes they are charging you 5 cents less to list and giving free gallery, but in the end they are making more off of you by upping their final value fees by 2-3.75 percent..

Heh i still owe ebay fee's from 2006 when i opened my original store, Made a few test sales didn't like the system so never paid for it!. The business account no longer exists that they're trying to direct debit from and haven't heard anything since...!

I pose a question to you all though: If there was a free alternative to eBay, Where rather than paying "fee's" ontop of what you sell... you simply pay a subscription fee and are allowed to sell X amount of items per month... Would you use it?.

Well so far most of the people are going to ola.com or onlineauction.com . They have wayyyyy better fees. The only thing is ebay has better traffic, for now ;)
