Edisto Serpentarium

Nothing in the world better than a trip down to the Low Country SC, and I'd go in a heartbeat. . BUT
The Serpentarium is closed right now. My wife and I go down there in mid May every year and get a cabin on the Isand for the week. This is the week I leave Cell phones, Computers and Everything else at home and get away from it all.
This is a really nice place to check out if you haven't been. There's a State Park down there on the Beach.. . and the Beaches are Fantastic. It's low commercial, and if you get there before July, or after first of Septemeber, it's low traffic and very peacefull.
The Serpentarium is open from first of May to (I think) last of Sept. If you do plan a trip there, go about the first of May. . the island is also a sancuary for Logger head Turtles. They come up on the beaches at night, and lay eggs and then head back out to the ocean. If you go out at night, you can probably see several of these hugh turtles on the beach. First year my wife and I went down there ('97), they had a picture on the door of a suvienier shop there on the beach of a record sized loggerhead they had spotted on the beach that night. A research group from USC-Aiken caught it, weighed, tagged and released it !

Forgot to mention too . . . . .Watch out for the Aligators !!!

We get a place down on the lower end of the island. It's built around a golf course and recreation area. There's a small man made lake down there that channels around the golf course, and there's about 3-4 aligators that stay in there. They will come out onto the banks and backyards of some of the cabins from time to time.
I have several pictures of them. There's one that stays down there, that's 8-10 feet long !!!
 
that sounds quite fascinating Spurticus! thats really wicked, those loggerhead turtles and all. my girlfriends mother was stationed in the army in SC a ways back.she had a friend of her's that would go watch the turtles lay their eggs at night then watch them cover up the eggs and head back out.me and my girl have been planning on doin that. it seems like it's been popping up so much lately that i think this is a sign telling me to just GO!!!!! LOL. i only knew about Edisto Island Serpentarium because it popped up on my GPS as an point of interest as i was driving my beautiful 2,600 mile trip home! hahaha. But the best place to check out in my opinion besides the famed National Everglades Park is the Apalachicola National Forest in North West Florida.it's home to Tate's Hell(a breeding ground for cottonmouth's and alligators)i saw my first ever EDB rattler and tons of other great herps. but the EDB was by far the highlight of my trip.Wright Lakes is the spot to go. There me and my lady swam with the alligators and believe me they were there. You should really check em' out. it's a real "wild" experience. :)

I could sit/stand for hours watching EDBs. HUGE SNAKES when they're fully grown adults. I've got tons of pictures of some from the trips down to Edisto too.
The Apalachicola National Forrest suggestion sounds like a winner. Would love to do that sometime soon myself. I used to make a lot of trips down to Florida, but haven't been down there in quite a while. Love the Panama City and Fort Walden beach area the best, but have been all over the state in my younger days. I bet they have some interesting herps in those everglades and marshes huh ?
 
Definetly man. it's a trip.my girlfriend is completely fascinated by the things we see. and so am i. i have a few pics of the EDB(the one i mentioned) from the trip on my profile page in the field herping 08' album and many others from this summer.you should really check them out.we didn't have an amazing amount of luck as far as the snakes go this summer down south, because of the intense drought conditions.plus everything we found we don't hav pics of but the rest of the stuff was more types of musk turtles,black racers, and a teaxas rat snake, plenty of balck rats, and a truck load of garters. no real big losses though.but yeah, Apalachicola is about 1/2 hour-45 min. away from panama city.depending how fast you drive ;) it's worth it. there are tons of sites with info. just type in "TATE'S HELL" in any search engine.There's no doubt in my mind you'll enjoy it.
