Eee! Getting a Honduran, input please!

So while chatting with a local breeder about corns for my first snake, he mentioned that he was going to be breeding his new Hondurans for the first time, and asked me if I would like to go with one of them instead. The snakes are *gorgeous*. The females are tangerines(one of them DH Ghost so there's a whole new decision to make, coloured or monochrome) and the male is a tri-coloured hypo.

It seems milks are good for beginners from what I've read online, and I love milk snakes. It's the first kind of snake I ever saw close up and touched. What I'd like is opinions from actual people and info on what they're like to deal with. :) Thanks very much for help.:)

I dont have any milks, but i know for a fact most are more spazzy then corns. From what I heard they tend to musk and bite a lot more then corns. They are beautiful snakes though, good luck :)

I have heard the same. If you love milk snakes then a few musks and some spazzy behavior is worth it.

Hondos are gorgeous snakes and their temperament does not stop me from wanting one! Let us know what you decide.
Go for the tang! :)

I have heard they are a little calmer than some, but I'm certainly no expert. My Pueblan is a musky spazz, but she is little yet, and she never bites..

Does he have any you can go handle and see how you like the milksnake personality? What color did you look at? I've heard that the hypo tangerines are spazzier than the others, but of course, the most beautiful! And I think there can be issues with getting them to eat mice- so if you get one, make sure it's had several meals of FT mice first.

Thanks everyone! Spazziness and smells don't bug me, so that wouldn't be an issue.

I've seen the snakes he's going to breed on the website, so I potentially have tangerines, tricolours, or even ghosts to choose from(I like the tangerines a lot, but the ghosts look so neat!). Definitely will not be picking up mine until its eaten a few times, and I'd say the breeder would probably be more comfortable with it that way as well; he'll also be supplying me with my feeders.

They are more difficult to raise than corns. You will have more feeding problems with milks than corns. Just so you know.

I love milk snakes. Hondos have some outstanding colors. Just be aware that they are not corns.

I have three Hondurans, and they're all different.

'05 Male (Tangerine): Complete spaz, but no musking or biting (well, he bit my sister once). Eats whatever, whenever.

'06 Female (Hypo-Tangerine): Mellow. Eats whatever, whenever.

'07 Male (Hypo-Tangerine): Somewhat spazzy, but no musking or biting. Eats live prey only.

Thanks! Was the male started on live prey for refusing F/T, or fed live to begin with?

I didn't get him as a tiny hatchling, so I'm not sure what he was started on. I think his previous owner fed him live rat pups because he had a steady supply of them from his own breeders. When I got him, he refused f/t mice, but took live rat pups. Then I got him on live mouse hoppers, and he took an f/t hopper ONCE. But he's refused all f/t since, so I've been buying him live mice.

Alrighty. The breeder feeds F/T so that's what mine should be getting from the start, so hopefully that goes well. Thanks!

I love my Honduran.. One of my favorite snakes.

I love her and she loves baby quail.

I have a Nelson's, so not the same, but she _is_ a milksnake. She has never, ever missed even one meal for me. She has never bitten me. She has musked me nearly every time I've handled her in the year and three months I've had her. If she was my only snake, I'd be disappointed, because I would want a snake that seemed to enjoy being handled and spending time with me. Inez just makes it quite clear she'd rather be doing anything but that.

I actually have never been musked by any of my kings, corns and milks. I guess I am just lucky that way (won't talk about water snakes and garters though).

My honduran milk just loves to be handled.

Hatchling Hondurans can be a real handful! They are true escape artists, poo fingers & biters! IMHO if you are just starting out stick with a corn.:)

I have a hondo. She is a little wench. Spazzy, bitey, musks, the works. Thankfully, she will eat ANYTHING dangled in front of her (fingers are not out of the question either). It is my personal opinion that a corn is a MUCH better starter snake than a milk. I know that I would not have been able to handle Lacy if she had been my first snake.

And (in my experience) their bites are MUCH worse than a corn bite. Milks like to dig in and chew on you a bit.

Got to agree with everyone here. Weston went through a hondo stage....in fact there is still a 400.00 snake loose somewhere in the garage (hypo hondo het. amel)...escape artists and a little crazy. I loved them, but the spaz factor weighed in. Also there is a size difference between hondos and corns....the hondos can get a little on the hefty side. But, I never had a problem getting them to eat, just getting them to stay in one place.

Yup! That reminds me, though my female pueblan has never bit me, I had purchased a pair initially. The male, was a biter and even when tiny would bite, hold, and twist. Lovely little maneuver, lol. I remember thinking, "Hope he doesn't do that when he get's big.."

Excellent, thanks! Info from both sides. :) the deciding factor for me is probably going to happen when I handle them.
