Er...

Drucifer

The wonders of animation.
Right, today is feeding day.
Put the pinkie near him and he just ignored it.
Left him there for about 10 minutes
Still ignored it.
I read in "The Corn Snake Manual",
how to coax them to feed, did so, still no luck. ):
Also, I had some quite big hides in there, he's only about 30cm, in a 3ft Viv.
When I took them out (He still has rocks to hide under which are small), he has become way more active.
He can still hide under the rocks etc, but is the normal?
Also he still refuses to eat the pinkie.
I've left him alone with the pinkie in the Viv for a while aswell.
Can someone give me some advice?

Ok, well there are many ways to try to get them to eat. First off I would just leave him in a separate container with one pinky for a few hours.

Try that and see if that works. If not try doing a search on feeding problems and see If that helps.

Tell us if he eats for you.

Ok I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah I read about that.
I'll try that in a few hours if he don't eat

Kay he didn't eat, I put him back in his tank with the pinkie.

Maybe he's not hungry..

Some corns will take their move to a new home in their stride, but lots do take time to settle. I'd recommend no handling for 5 days or so, then put in small container with warm defrosted pinkie in a dark, quiet place.
Good luck :)

yeah, some snakes can just be fussy eaters. some like 'em live, although i don't recommend it. some are just picky like that. maybe it just doesn't want to eat now. i skip some meals as well. it just happens. i wouldn't worry too much about it. pinky's are cheap. if he didn't eat today. try tommorrow. in a seperate container. i only feed mine in their viv's when i've totally forgot and am REALLY busy. it's not a good habbit to get into. i'm sure he'll eat sooner or later. keep us posted though!

cheers!

Update:
He's (I swear it's a she) made progress, managed to make him bite it, he got the pinkie head in his mouth, but then spat it out. ):

I assume you're feeding f/t? If so, check that first the pinky is completely thawed, and second that the temerature of the pinky is relative to the temerature of a live animal. Soaking the pinky in hot tap water to thaw it will increase the skin temerature, giving the "feel" of live prey to your snake in as much as external body temerature is comparable.

Hope this helps some, and good luck with your "project" snake...

Check that it's the correct size as well. I second and third the leave them in a dark place, taking FT seems to work better after live when they are thawed in warm water as was suggested. And don't peek at them lol leave him be to eat if he's shy.

We learned the hard way, alot of things can be just "off" enough to put them off eating.... stress is a biggie, so is viv temperature, prey temperature and a multitude of other things.

My tutor at college said the viv is too big.

:shrugs:

Now that's strange.
I was told to put him/her in a plastic box in the viv, with wet tissues, a hide and water and see what happens.

3 ft does sound rather large for a hatchling(?). My first thought was also about the size of the pinkie, since he took the head and then refused it. Make sure to wait at least four days between refusals. You don't want that to be a habit.

My big guy was a very shy eater. The mouse dance irritated the heck out of him. He required that the room be dark, no one in it and a dark cloth over the feeding container for several years. He will now let me observe him most of the time, but he takes his time and he still gets pissed if I try the mouse dance. He wants it left in the middle and when he gets to it, he'll get to it :)

I thought it was quite big, thing is, he managed to get out of the box that I put in the viv and went straight back to his usual hiding spot in the Viv. :grin01:

I don't think 3 ft is too big for a hatching. I've put more than one hatchling directly into its permanent home, and they've done fine. The only thing I would suggest is to maybe add more hides, or some fake leaves and stuff.

Update:
I put Sydney in her/his feeding box today, then went and quickly changed her water bowl, when i came back, i smelt something REALLY bad coming from the feeding box, i thought it was the pinkie, but upon looking inside, she/he has defecated, now, is this a good thing?
Does it mean we have progress?

Something must have gone IN for something to have come OUT.
