Oh, man! Glad he was there, just waiting to be found :) How do they get out?!?! I am always surprised when one escapes and I swear the lid was tight! I did install a door guard on the bottom of my snake room door . . . I think maybe they are for drafts? It is this plastic "L" shaped piece with rubber foam on the bottom. That way, if any more do escape, at least they can't leave the snake room! I hope it works, anyway. It hasn't been tested yet :)

Oh, jeez, that kind of came out wrong! No offense taken or meant, Eric! I should have said something like "Eric helped me to understand the difference between the two". I didn't really mean "corrected" ~LOL~ I was sneaky-typing at my sister's BBQ so sort of typed the first thing that popped into my head ~LOL~ She yells at me to be more sociable when I check the forum at family gatherings too much :)

I'm with you there ~LOL~ Not only am I a yank, but a West Coast one at that ;)

I was in New Orleans once and was wondering around, looking for this restaurant I had read about online and must have taken a wrong turn. These very nice old, black gentlemen were sitting on in their lawn chairs giving me these funny looks. They very politely asked if maybe I was lost? ~LOL~ They also advised me that I probably did not want to continue walking down the road I was on. I explained where I was trying to go and they very kindly pointed me in the right direction. I guess I sort of stuck out in the neighborhood I was wandering around in. :shrugs:
 
Well, I just caught earl in the act of escaping, AGAIN. Even though we have clips on his lid and it was sealed tight he managed to get enough leverage to push up a corner and out he went. And of course he made a beeline right for the new female we have. As of now there is a phone book on his lid so between the phone book and the shelf above his tank he wont have enough room to get out....hopefully.
 
What type of clips do you use? The ones I use seem virtually impossible to escape from. Even if I use my own strength pulling up on the edges of the screen covers I could barely bend the clips up.
 
Yeah those seemed too springy to me when I was shopping for clips. I use these kind, a little pricey but they seem to work. What I had been doing was putting 4 clips on each cage (2 on each side). But the last time I needed the clips petco only had 1 package (2 clips). Even with just 1 clip on each side of a 20 gallon long it was still hard to push the screen up and I haven't bothered buying another set.

The only issue I've had is they are sometimes difficult to remove, but now having 5 cages with them on I've gotten the hang of them. (Also, I think they should package some instructions with them! I was thoroughly confused when I first started using them)

i have those, they work but they are a pain in the but! for larger tanks, you dont need the little L shaped ones. All you do is slide the short end over the top of the lid, and the long end will extend downwards and clip under the rim of the aquarium. If you have a smaller aquarium, you'll need to jam the little pieces in b/w the glass and the frame first then clip the bigger ones over the top of the lid and under the little jammed ones. It's hard to explain, but once you see them in person, you'll get it :)

Here you go, this is on a 20 long. For a 10 gallon I find that the L shape piece needs to be bent to look more like a V because the space is smaller or something. At the end of the vid I show how strong they are by lifting up the whole tank by the lid (of course I wouldn't recommend doing this habitually :laugh:)

 
The lid clasps I use are LIKE the ones that come from Petco, but I really prefer the ones I have to Petco's. They come in two sizes, one for 5-40 (I think), and then ones for 40 and up. I took some pics to show what they look like, and how to set them on. :) Very nice to use...

I really do suggest these ones over the Petco ones. I got the Petco ones, and right away as I was fitting them to the screen one of them got a crack. Since the tank isn't in use as of now, I'm letting it go. As the snake gets older, though, I'll have to buy ANOTHER pair. PLUS, the ones that I like more come with 4 altogether, unlike Petco's, which came with one pair of small, and one large pair. They're very secure, and takes a half a minute or so to remove them, which imo, is worth it. What's a minute compared to the loss of a snake?

If you are gonna keep snakes in a glass tank I recommend the ones with the tops that slide on a rail from the front and then click into place. My snakes have never gotten out of that type. The ones that you put a screen on top and use clips... escape all the time, even with books.
