Everyone, meet FLASH, LOL...

Wylie

Meet Sparkle... :D
WOW, what a difference! I just got my new snake today from SMR to replace my Wylie who died last Wed and WOW, this one is MUCH more energetic!!

First off, when I opened the box, and took out the plastic container he was in, he was trying his darndest to push that lid off with his nose, then when I lowered the container down into the tank and pulled the lid off, he slithered quite quickly right into the cave hide. Now this is in STARK CONTRAST to Wylie's behavior when I first got him. When I got him, he stayed curled up on the bottom of the plastic container and I actually scooped him out, then put him in his tank. From the getgo he was never very active and even when he did move, it was NEVER fast. When I handled him he would mostly hang out on me and only move around for about 30 sec at a time then would rest on me for another 5 min. I haven't handled this one yet (cause I'm trying to do everything exactly right and not handling him for several days til I go to feed him) but I have a feeling that I'm gonna have a difficult time even doing so, I have a feeling he's gonna be trying to get away or at least be moving around so fast that I'll be afraid of him getting away! Also, this one HIDES, REALLY well. Wylie never really hid, I could always see him, some part of his body was almost always visible. And Wylie NEVER went under the paper towels. Well... not too long after I put this one in the tank, I couldn't find him for nothing! I looked in all the hides (from outside the tank) and couldn't see him. Well finally, about an hour ago, my husband found him, said he was partly under the paper towels, so apparently he had gone in between the layers of paper towels, hehe, that little stinker! After my husband spotted him, then he got very active and was ALL OVER THE TANK exploring, mainly trying to find a way out, LOL. I watched him the whole time, he spent about 30 min exploring the tank trying to find a way out before he once again retreated to hiding in between the paper towel layers. And MY GOSH is he freaken FAST!!! Such a stark contrast from Wylie's slow movements (including his digestion)! Anyway, I really enjoyed watching him, and he didn't seem to mind when three of us where standing there watching him, hehe. So I'm happy, even though he seems to be the opposite of Wylie so far, he makes me laugh, the name "Wylie" would have been so much more fitting for him instead of the first snake, LOL! He's so energetic and quick. I'm still coming up with possible names for him, ones to fit his personality, but I think I'll wait til I handle him on Sunday for his feeding before I make a final decision. Flash DOES come to mind, LOL. Rascal comes to mind too, among others, ha ha.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news! I have a good feeling about this one! :)

Thats great, hope you have better luck with this little guy!

Don't forget photos once hes settled in. ;)

Congrats! :dancer:

I am sure you will have much better luck with this one.

I second the request for pics! :p

Pics... definitely!

This little guy is CRAZY!! He's somehow managed to knock leaves off the fake tree and he knocked over the little dixie cup I had in there for a hide, LMAO!!! He's apparently still bound and determined to get out of that tank!

Sooo... how long do they (hatchlings) do this before they realize their efforts are futile and calm down? I mean dang, he presses and grinds his little nose hard against the glass! This one sure is wirey! I bet he's gonna be a really good eater too, I bet he'll be on the pinkie and have it down way quicker than Wylie did. He just seems pretty fiesty to me. Fiesty is okay, I just hope he's not aggressive towards me. He didn't show any aggression at all when I looked at him in his plastic container. Wylie actually did at first but then after that he didn't seem to mind anything.

Yep. You will find that much of the time your snake is out moving around, it will be checking to make sure that you secured its viv :p

Congrats on the new, more energetic corn! Sounds like he is a fiesty little guy. I bet he will thrive in your care :)

Nice!

Yeah, they'll always check for lapses in your security, but the duration of the initial determined effort depends on your snake. Could be just a few days.... could be weeks.

Enjoy the new little one and best of fortune with him!

Glad Flash is adjusting well! I have three babies right now. One comes out at 6PM and sits in a vine at the top, by the screen. After a while she will go sit in her hollow log and watch me. One cruises around her viv and climbs and never really sits still. If I go to get her out, she strikes at me. She is really small and really fast. One comes out every evening for short periods and stretches up to the top of his viv. If I happen to see him, I'll take him out. He seems to love to come out. He's the only one of the three that hasn't bit me.

I have a feeling Flash will try to get away from me when I go to get him out, either that or he may strike at me, put it this way, I just don't think that he'll just sit there quietly like Wylie did while I pick him up. I know enough to not let it phase me at all if he strikes at me but I'm worried about his trying to get away from me when I go to get him to feed him on Sunday. I mean I really don't want to have to chase him around the tank trying to get him, I would think that would be pretty stressful for him (and me!) and once I get him I surely don't want to feel like I need to keep a good grip on him to keep him from taking off on me. Eh, guess it doesn't help to worry about it before any of that even happens, I guess I'll just deal with it when the time comes. One way or another he's gonna have to come out to eat.

It really blows my mind though how this snake is so different from my first snake. Wylie just hung out in his hides all day long and he never was completely hidden (I really liked always being able to see him) and even when he did get active, he never went nutty trying to get out like this one does, he seemed content to just stroll around the tank. This one stays completely out of sight most of the time since I got him and when he comes out, he justs acts like a nut the whole time trying desperately to get out. Gosh I really liked Wylie's personality, I sure wish he wouldn't have died on me. :( Hopefully I will come to like this one as much as I did Wylie, but I still have my doubts. I just hope this one eventually chills out some and doesn't stay out of sight all the time and doesn't go nuts trying to get out of the tank anytime he's active cause that will get old real quick, I mean I'm not gonna enjoy a snake like that as much as I enjoyed the calm disposition that Wylie had.

Mine didn't try to leave until I'm actually picking them up... then it's amazing how quickly those little buggers can move. Didn't take long, though, for them to decide that I'm not that much of a threat and be better about it. I still don't touch them putting them back in their tubs after feedings. I just pour them in gently from the feeding tub.

So the consensus seems to be that given enough time, 99% of them calm down as far as the looking for ways to get out and trying to get away when you handle them? If so, that's good, I can be patient. :)

Ha ha, who was it who told me to be aware of the fact that baby corn snakes like to wedge themselves up along the back of the critter cage where the screen top slides into? I came home from the skating rink tonight and looked in my critter cage to find Flash wedged up along the back along the sliding screen top! Wow, compared to Wylie, this snake is a FREAK!!!! LOL.

Congratulations on the new little one!

I'm pretty sure once he's got a few feeds under his belt and realises you're not a threat then he will settle pretty quickly.

Best wishes,

Guilty! I learned that lesson with my northern brown. Took the lid off and set it aside and couldn't find the snake anywhere, till I went to put the lid back on....

You can link the pics from photobucket straight onto your post by clicking on the IMG link on the photobucket page under each picture. That'll copy the link to your clipboard, then you come back to your post and paste it on. Long as it's the right size (thanks again, Jenn) you're good to go!

Flash looks great, btw!

Almost missed this GREAT yawn shot!

Ha ha, well, I could still see him, he was really trying hard to wedge himself in there but so far he hasn't managed to do it well enough so that he is out of sight. Thanks again though for the heads-up.

Yeah, I know, it's just that I had so many, didn't want to clutter things up, and I couldn't begin to decide which few are the best, heh.

The yawn shot was total luck. I had my digital camera on the fastest picture taking speed possible and just kept snapping hoping to catch a few good shots of him, hehe, guess it worked!

Thanks, I'm really enjoying how active he's been today! :D
