Fat Corn snake....

ClickClickClickBOOM!

The Maddest Hatter
How can you tell when a corn snake is over weight? Benji is about 21-22 inches and 38 grams...is he fat? His stomach is kinda "squishy"... if so....how can I fix this? Should I start feeding him every other week?

I feel like such a noob ><
Btw: he's eating 9-10 grams fuzzies

Sounds fine to me. I dont think over weight. My 09 ultramel is roughly same length and weight

I don't know enough about corn snakes yet to give serious advice, but if corn snakes are like people the recommendation would be to put Benji on Asbit's exercise regimen. He's a youngster & still growing so it's better to increase activity than to cut food. This is what is recommended for overweight human children, anyway.

alrighty >< I was just worried. I know being over weight is pretty much bad for any animal's health...figured it was the same for snakes

Sounds like your being a good snakey parent and sounds like Benji is likely fine but pics are the best way to tell and well always fun to look at!!

Heres two body shots

My Amel is about 28 inches (but is in the blue) and weighs 124 g. AS long as there are no folds of scales/skin where the snakes is curved the snakes is doing good. My lil girl has no issues with being fat, she's just coming along nicely. In fact I found out through weighing that I may have been under feeding her. For a while there i had no scale so had to do best guess. Turns out I have been giving her 6 to 9 grams each week and not seeing the growth I expected, I also noticed she was *bump* less after only 4 hours from feeding time. She was also being VERY active immediately after being fed. So keep an eye on your snake and I really recommend a scale to be sure feeding is going well :)

We have a food scale((We actually got it just for him ><)) and feed him 8 -9 gram fuzzies every week. He appears to be growing well but I'm pretty new to this and unsure of what the usual Weight X Length ratio should be. He has a lump for an appropriate amount of time after feeding so I do believe I'm feeding the right size. I guess I'm just paranoid...><

The real question is, CAN a very young snake *get* fat?? I've often wondered that, since they put everything they get into growing at that age, and the rest just comes out the other end... :shrugs:

Anyway, your snake looks great, weight-wise. He's lovely, too! =)

That's a good question! I think the concern is mostly for older snakes, um, 3 years plus maybe? Although knowing the signs are a good thing just in case.

what a pretty little dude you've got there! You've been given alotta great answers, and I have nothing to add that has not been said. But I wanted to comment on the cutie-pie snakey. (he's not too chubby! When he's a little older, keep an eye out for 'junk in the trunk' :D)
There's no real size to weight chart or anything really, mainly because just like people there are many snake body types, and whats right for one may not be right for another. :)
