Feeding a Dreamsickle Corn.

Hi,

I am new to this list and need some help. I (my granddaughter)
have a 6 and 1/2 foot dreamsickle corn, male, a little over two years old, I think. We have had this corn named Max for about 1 1/2 years and he has just reached the point where he is not eating at all. He shed and then he ate 2 medium mice. Since
then (about 4 weeks) he has not eaten at all. He is very active
and drinks a lot of water. I have offered him a mouse at least
3 times and he lets them wander around his terrarium for a few days and then he kills them and wanders away. He will not
eat anything that is dead beyond an hour or so. Should I try
smaller mice or pinkies? Or will he just eat when he is hungry.
He is beautiful and even tho my grand daughter is getting tired
of him, I do not want him to get sick.

Please Help!

how about senting food

just my 2-cents but what about senting your corns food? I hear chicken broth or anoles work welll. How about giving him smaller but more often food? He could be going through hibernation or something. Don't worry to much about as long as he's not getting tooo skinny. They can go acouple months off feed. Just keep trying smaller food sented food maybe swich to rats rather than mice try f/t or fresh killled. don't resourt to froce feeding! unless you've tried everything above and more
goood luck
never give up

oh one more thing

one more question whats a dreamsickle corn? I've never heard of them. Can you post a pic maybe?

don't get worried too much. many males go off food at this time of year. 4 of my males are off food right now. this is breeding season for them and right now your cream probably just has something more important on his mind than food. just make sure he has plenty of water and he should be fine. enjoy!!!--- jim

I think Jim hit it on the head... dont worry about him not eating... It'll take a while before he starts to get hungry... I would continue trying to feed him medium mice... but whateva you do! dont leave a live mouse in with your snake alone!!! I dont care if its a pinky... well maybe not... but mice can cause lots of damage on a snake that really cares less about it... thats just my 2 1/2 cents worth...

Definately sounds like mating behaviour rather that hibernation. If they are about to hibernate they are not very active at all because they are getting ready to slow their metabolisms etc. My male is not eating just now either, hopefully he'll take a small fuzzie next week!
Good luck, Rachel

My male is also not eating

my male is looking as if he has started to skip meals...well this is the first one , but glad to hear i dont have to be worried....:) ate 2 weeks back 2 mice

if he's only 2 years old and hes already 6 1/2 feet long....then I don't think its a corn. Could be a rat snake, but I've never seen a corn reach that length in only 2 years. I don't think its mating behaviour yet cuz he's got a few more months to go. I think hes just preparing for brumation. Remember, before they settle down for the winter, snakes fast. Their stomachs must be empty of all food and toxins, so thats probably why he's off his feed. Mating season isn't until about Feb. In about a month to a month and 1/2 from now, slowly reduce his heat and light until its about 55-60 degrees and then turn his light off completely and let him sleep. Don't mess with him or disturb him except to change his water once a week or so. He won't go completely into hibernation; he'll stay a little active, just not much. End of Jan/beginning of Feb, slowly turn his light and heat back up to normal (over about a 2 week time period as well) and he'll be hungrier than ever. After about a month, he might stop eating just because males tend to get a little too "ready" around that time, and eating is not a priority to them. Don't worry...he'll be back tino full swing about a month or so after that. Try to take him in to a herp specialist and see what kind of snake he is though, cuz like I said, I've never heard of a corn that big that young. Let me know how he is!

Hi Jynx - this thread was started in April, so it would have been breeding season back then.
