feeding and how often ??

Hi, guys, I hope you're all well. I am still new to all this and really appreciate all your advice as your all so knowledgeable, I have been watching endless videos on youtube and I have seen quite a few people feed their corn snakes two or three pinkies on the pop... I just feed mine (A 4-month-old) 1 pinkie on a Wednesday and then another on the Sunday, is this enough as I don't want to underfeed him. What you think guys. Also, I never seem to get to hold him as I like to leave 48 hours, before holding him. Am i doing all this right. Please advise me, guys.. Asher

Hi Asher, generally feeding every 5 days is plenty, and many people only feed once a week. I'm not organized enough to feed exactly every 5 days, so mine *usually* got fed every 5 or 6 days. As long as you're feeding the right size, you don't need to feed more often than that. Your snake will grow a little more slowly, which is healthier from what I have read, and you will have the added bonus of getting more handling time between meals!

Hi albertagirl . Thanks for that, I will see if I can do that and it's like you said it gives you more time to handle them, he is only 4 months old so not sure if he is ready for more handling yet, just want to get him tame and used to me. Thank you

I'd just go with every five days. If you feed twice a week, that's really pushing it, plus you can never handle the baby because he's always digesting.

Thanks Nanci yes I will go with that and also it will be a good way to get used to him and him me. Why I got ya here Nanci he is 4 months old and I have had him 3 weeks when would you think he would shed ? And he is at an alright age to handle ? Thanks a lot you have been brilliant.

You can handle him from the minute he hatches. They typically shed every four weeks, maybe even a little bit more often, as babies. I do not feed when the hatchling is blue. This means if you're feeding on a five day schedule he'll miss one or two feedings. That's okay.

You know he's blue because he isn't out and active when you'd expect him to be, or you weigh him before feeding and he's gained a lot more than expected (he didn't really gain weight, he just didn't poop out his last meal.)

Hi well I never see him out to be honest he is either in his warm hide or cooler hide. I wondered if I don't have the temperature set right so I have it no set at 28 just in case or is that to high. I don't think he is blue yet but his coat does look quite dullish. He is eating fine and not missed a meal. Feel quite confused and worried as I wonder if he should be a bit more active than what he is. Oh dear any advise. Many thanks

28 is not too high. Sometimes they are very active, sometimes they are not. Generally they will be more active as they are finished digesting and getting hungry they go looking for food. Since you have been feeding twice a week, yours has been spending all his time digesting and would have had no need to go looking for food. As you cut back from feeding so often you will probably see more activity. But if the colors are looking dull he may be approaching a shed and will stay inactive until that is done. No need to worry.

Hi Asher!

I think also that you might be looking for him or his eyes to literally be "blue," which doesn't occur the same with all snakes, especially albinos or snakes with red eyes (I have two that I REALLY have to look at over a period of 2-3 days to determine if they are ready to shed!).

If the skin is "dull," then he really might be "blue." However, it could still be a few days to a week till he actually sheds!

No need to worry so much. Really. Your snake will let you know its routines if you observe and be patient. Feed him once a week. As others have pointed out, he will be constantly digesting if you feed him more frequently. Also, try to feed him the appropriate sized rodent on a weekly basis. (Rule of thumb is 10% of their body weight weekly). When he reaches adulthood, you can feed him less frequently (every 2 weeks or so) but if you monitor this forum, I'm sure you'll see other threads related to this by then! Observe for signs of irritability when handling and while in the enclosure and you'll get to know what he likes and what he don't.

When in doubt, ask questions here and hopefully someone more experienced than me will see and respond!!!

Later On!

Wow ok great stuff guys. And to be honest makes perfect sense of course if he is not hungry he won't be active. I have set the thermos at 28 in the warm area as checked on here and on line. The staff at the pet centre told me 25 ! I am also going to change the substrate to aspen instead of orchid bark ! Again the pet centre told me to put orchid bark in there And how much to feed him. Aspen is better from what I have read esp on here. Man I am so glad I have found you guys on here. Thank you.

That sounds like it would work out just fine for ME! I am definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so it only makes sense!

I think sometimes people just over complicate things and worry about "the chart says he should eat a 15g mouse, and its is 16g, will he be ok?!?!?!?"
