Few questions from a newbie

Hey everyone this is my first post. I have been researching getting a young Ball python for a while now but came across a corn that I couldn't pass up this morning. I got it from a show and was told she was an Albino Oakatee born August 2008. My question is, like I said I was reading all about ball pythons and read some people suggested not placing them in high traffic areas in your home. Right now my corn is in a high traffic area, does that bother and stress them also? If so I can move the enclosure to the bedroom... The thing is most of the time I'm up with the lights in the bedroom on until after midnight. Will that much light and so little amount of darkness bother her? Thanks for the advice in advance, and I will get some pics of her up in a few days after shes settled in a bit.

Hi,
I don`t like impulse buying animals. Nothing is ready for the new fellow and everything has to be setup and testrun with the snake already in it. :(
What morph is she, that you couldn`t resist? :licklips:

Anyway, yes, "high traffic" affects a corn as much as every snake (and reptil, I think). So I would move the viv. Mine is in the livingroom, where the light is mostly on until midnight or so (just one little desk lamp, though), too. If I am awake longer after that, I cover the glass front of my wood viv with a blanket.

Hope that helps.
Greetings,
marike

I'm pretty new to snake ownership as well and you have positively come to the right place, the experts here are great and have helped me through a few dilemmas. But answering your question, i actually put my viv in the closet. That way during the day and when I am moving around in the room i leave the door open. Also, if it gets too late I can close the door and give her some peace and quiet. This is only what I've done though.

I wouldn't call it an impulse buy... I had everything setup for weeks monitored temperature and humidity wise with two digital acu-rites. I know balls need hot side 85-91 and cool 78-83 with 50-60% humidity. I was having trouble keeping that and was told by a friend I would have good luck with a corn instead. Witch ended me up here 4 days ago before I purchased the corn. With what I learned on here for a corn I got my tank to...

Warm side- 85.5 on the glass above the UTH
and 71.6 warm side air temp above the hide

Cool side- 73.2 with 46%-51% humidity overall between both sides

i have been able to keep that pretty steady for the last 3 days. I love all animals and would never bring something home I knew I could not care for properly.. All I'm really worried about is the foot traffic that goes near her. I don't want her to be stressed at all. thanks guys

My adults are in the living room, high traffic and with my random shift pattern and 3 grown-up sons the lights are on randomly all night with no problems. (My babies are in my bedroom, random light pattern due to my shifts but low traffic, no problems)
If you provide plenty of cover in the form of hides and fake foliage the snake should be fine. My 2 edest boys are studying music production, play guitars and mix music. If it's not loud enough to annoy the neighbours, your snake should be able to cope IMO

here is a pic of the tank. obviously left side hot, right side cool. the humidity dropped a few percent though.... she has been in the paper towel roll for a while now, I think the two plastic hides are a bit big for her right now. I will replace them with two smaller hides tomorrow...

Nice set-up! I'd leave the hides, she'll use 'em if she wants. But the law of reptile keeping states snakes will ignore a $10 for a toiletroll tube every time!

im just going to tell you this once,
impulse buys are a big big no no
since i didnt bother to read your posts and i dont know anything about you i am going to tell you that assuming that you are an idiot
since you didnt tell us in your very first post that it was an albino okeetee that caught your eye, i am going to ask, what morph prompted you to impulse buy?

now that my sarcasm is done
welcome to the forums
sounds like you are well on your way to an addiction that they dont make rehabs for yet

That was rude!!! I have been in the reptile trade for 16 years. I have seen it all. I have worked for pet stores for years. I have owned and breed hundreds of snakes and hatched out thousands. I will tell you there is nothing wrong with what you did. Ball pythons are a terrible snake. They are bad eaters and all they do is lay there in a ball. Corns are a much better starter snake!!! You had everything set up for a ball and got a corn. Good for you. The set ups are pretty much the same. As for the high traffic. I have raised corns without heat in small cages in to big of cages. I have given them to much heat. It was all a learning process. They can make it through about anything. They are not going to care if lights go on or off. They are not going to care if people walk by every 5 mins or never. I commend you on your purchase and stay away from ball pythons just a bad snake in my opinion.

Welcome from a fellow corn newbie. I've had many many snakes, but just got (for my 5 year old daughter actually) my first corn. She's still settling into her new home. Seems to be a very cool little snake.

Ok wow, I knew that guy was trying to be funny wven without the disclaimer, geeze. . .

I have all of my corns (post quaratine) in the livingroom. Other than a regurge from a baby that was being fed every other week by the breeder (whom I was trying to feed every week) I have not had any issues. They all eat, are active as is normal for corns, shed normally, etc. I also sleep in the livingroom (3 kids and only 3 bedrooms, sigh) so the light and or tv or computer are on anywhere from 8pm to 3 am each night depending on when I go to bed. Doesn't seem to affect them of course I have the openings to their hides pointed away from the light sources. So that may help. An Albino Okeetee is really called a Reverse Okeetee, just a little FYI for ya :)

i wasnt really trying to be funny
only observing that the OP seemed like he/she knew what he/she was doing
and someone else, who doesnt even know any of the OPs background is slamming the OP for an "impulse buy", then goes on to ask what morph made the OP impulse buy, when the OP clearly states the morph in the original post
to all those that really thought i was calling the OP an idiot, i apologize
i have nothing but the utmost respect for the OP as he/she is involved in the same hobby that i so truly love
another welcome to our great new insomniac

gelshark was calling me an idiot for not reading the post right and concluding wrong. Thanks for that ;)
In my defense: it was pretty early in the moring for me.
By the way, because I`m really not sure: I don`t know "Albino Oakatee". Is RevOk, want he meant?

@ insomniac: I`m sorry that I got you wrong. Normaly, if I read "I was researching for" in a forum, it most of the time means, "I`ve seen plenty of pictures of beautiful snakes and want one".
You had everything worked out and set up. Again my apologies.

Greetings,
marike :dunce:

In order to avoid any confusion, I will use punctuation and proper grammar in this post (to the best of my ability).

First of all, Marike, I am not calling you or anyone an idiot.
Second, all I ask is that when new people come onto this forum, and they seem to be doing something wrong, or they do something that we might disagree with, that we try to be helpful instead of judgmental.
Marike did go on to answer the questions posed by the OP, and for that I commend Marike. I'll admit that I often skip over the main point of the reason why someone started a thread in the first place, and if you all want to call me an idiot for that, I will not think you are in the wrong, nor will I harbor ill feelings towards any for doing so.

Another welcome to our new member. You have come to a great community here.

It's no problem.... and i can sense sarcasm No offence taken by anything said by anyone here. I know your just trying to help, like i said i would never bring home an animal I didn't have a happy/healthy spot for it live.

Welcome to the forum! You will get used to everyone on here! We are all here for the same thing...to learn all there is to learn about our corns, to share information, and to share all the good and bad stories involved with corn keeping and sometimes even to vent and shoot the crap about nothing having to do with corns.
I love it here...it is my daily medicine!!! LOL

And believe me, corn keeping is addictive!!! We went from 1-8 in 2 months and are getting number 9 tonight. So many need good homes and am glad we are there for them!!

Again welcome aboard!!!!

Welcome! As it's been said you'll get used to everyone and their personalities((And alternate personalities)) real quick. Also as it's been said it IS addicting, I now have 6! 3 of which we just got this past week! If you want to have ANY hopes of surviving this epidemic I suggest NOT going to reptile shows...or anywhere that has corns for that matter. :3 good luck!
