Finally- my first corn!

Well last night I went in to give the baby a boiled pinky that I cut in half. She was under the paper towel ( like she has been for the last few days). Her head was hidden so I carefully lifted a corner of the paper towel and dropped the back half of the pinkie in the tub. Unfortunately it rolled and hit her, waking her up.

I waited an hour or two and went back in to see if she had eaten it. She hadn't. I decided to put the other half in on top of the paper towel. I went back in and she was out from under the paper towel and slightly apprehensive about my appearance. I put my finger up to the side of the tub and lo and behold if she didn't get in an "S" pose and make a short strike in my direction. I thought that's more like what she should act like. It was late and I didn't want to wait for her to hide again so I just opened the tub and dropped the head part in. She struck it but didn't grab it. I closed the tub and went to bed. In the morning she was out and both halves were still there.

So now I'm thinking- well they told me so, but I still couldn't believe she hadn't eaten. I went to work and when I got home decided to check on her. She was out and as upset as ever to see me. But then, I had to look twice. .. the head section was gone. I looked at her and could see the bulge.

Now I feel better about moving her into a new enclosure with all the comforts of home and letting her chill for a week or so.

Success!!!! Her first voluntary feed!!! Happy Happy Joy Joy.....Never a doubt-;):bounce:

Sure wish I could figure out women and have the same success rate I do with snakes. ;)

I am really glad she ate for you! Boiled seems to work a charm for me as well. Had a large clutch of 15 hatch out this year and every single one of them ate boiled the first time I offered it.

But as far as the lady who bred these guys.....
slap feeding before knowing whether or not they eat is a no-no....why purposely link a food item with stress if you don't have to??
And co habbing the adults....a huge huge stinking no no. You say they get along, but believe me, they don't. That poor female is constantly harassed during the breeding season and corns are not designed by nature to ever share a cage. Shame on her......

Well a little update on little corny: ( I'm still waiting on her to show me a little more of her personality before naming her).

I still consider her a problem feeder ( can you blame her? ), until I feel more comfortable with her feeding habits. I'm sure I haven't helped matters. Anyway, I finally got her out of the tub and into her new home. The first thing she did was a panic run from one side of the viv to the other and back again with the obligatory nose to the ceiling scan for escape possibilities in every corner. She also seemed to want to be on the other side from me, although at one point she was eyeballing me. But when I put my finger up to the glass, she scurried to the other side and dove into her new water bowl and curled up in a ball under the water. (Her reaction to me has been curling up in a ball pretty much all the time since day one). Only once did I see her even get in a strike pose.

So I just put her in it, but an hour later I decided to put a pinky in there. I didn't expect much but a couple of hours later the little chunk of TP roll cardboard I put it on was upside down and both snake and pinky were missing. I decided to dig around in the aspen around that area to see if maybe it was just knocked off and buried.

As I was digging around I disturbed the new queen of the castle as she poked her head out from under the hide on the heated side. I didn't pay her much mind and continued to move the bedding around to look for the pinkie. The next thing I know she's right there. I still didn't think anything about it until she coils up and strikes twice , connecting both times with authority.

IDK- I interpret that as a real good sign she likes her new home. And also maybe a little defensive over her newly perceived hunting grounds?

At any rate, I consider it a good thing. I think baby snakes should have a little aggressiveness or it's just not normal.

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?
