Finding females

TrpnBils

22 is not enough snakes
I intended to get an adult female sometime in the next few weeks, but it hadn't really sunk in that it was just beginning the breeding season until I made a few phone calls the other night. Nobody is getting rid of any breeding aged females.

What's a good time to start looking for them again...June or so? I'm looking for an Amel het anything, so it's nothing too fancy. This isn't really a problem, I'm just more curious than anything - are females that have been bred this year generally cheaper right after breeding season since they still have 9 or 10 months before they could even be used for breeding again?

Jeff -

I preface this post with the standard "I don't mean to be a jerk, but..." disclaimer - you may want to check out this thread that Rich started a week or so ago.

Good luck in your search.

jazz

Unless the breeder is going through one of those circumstances that sometimes happen to us in life (divorces, financial troubles, moving) most will not be parting with the breeding size females right now. If there's any 'good' time to buy one it would probably be after the egg laying season where some smaller breeders might sell the surplus females because they need more room for hatchlings and have already gotten the eggs.
Good luck, there's a lot of amels out there so if you post in 'corn snakes wanted' you could get some bites.

well, I don't really see how Rich's post relates to me since they're about two different things, but okay. I'm thinking about trying a breeding project next year, not this year...I don't really care when I get the female. I just had some space open up and I thought if I could get the female in advance, I might as well do that...I hadn't really taken into consideration that it was the beginning of the breeding season now, but when that thought crossed my mind, I wasn't mad about it. If I was in the position to be breeding this season, I wouldnt be selling my females either...that would be stupid.

All I asked is when females might normally be available again. I wasn't trying to hijack somebody's collection or screw them out of money. So I don't mean to be a jerk, but thanks for assuming that's the kind of person I am.

Wut? Dude, that was not Dale's intent at all! You can find females if you want to breed this year, you're just going to pay a premium for them---that was why he linked you to the thread. If you don't want to breed them this year, then wait until the summer and you'll be able to find stuff. Or, go after some 2004 animals that have some good size on them.

I tend to put my adults up for sale a while after breeding season. After the main surge of "hatchling season" has died down seems the best time, as people are not looking so much for hatchlings but looking for stuff for next year. :)

The other thing to consider (for anyone who is thinking of picking up an adult for next year) is that if you don't pick them up several months before you plan to breed them, there's no telling how far out of synch your "seasons" are with the seller's. Putting the male and female into brumation at the same time (in your own house) is the best way to synch them up for the next breeding season. So you are definitely being smart about it by not waiting till this winter or next spring. ;)

thats how i usually do it too, although at the moment i have too many, and with hatchlings due i really need to make a little space soon.

Jeff, how about an Amel Motley? I have a proven female Amel Motley (22 eggs!) that I would feel safe shipping in another 2-3 weeks. PM me if you're interested. :)

I was wondering about that too... my main reasons for wanting to get something in the next couple of months were 1) getting the "seasons" right as you mentioned, 2) so I would be more familiar with the new snake's behavior and feeding patterns by next spring, and 3) The main reason - I have open space, so I might as well fill it with something I can use eventually.

I'm also planning on getting another male either at the end of summer or the beginning of fall...something with more to it than just amel. If I do that, I'll breed the female to him instead so I can get a wider variety in the offspring hopefully. My other concern (which is the reason I asked about prices in my original post) was that if I get this female at the end of this breeding season, I don't want to end up with a snake that was double clutched and have her end up dead because of it. If I were to find a cheaper female after breeding season, I'd like to know whether that's normal or whether it's reduced in price maybe because of health issues or other problems.

And all I responded with was a link to a thread discussing the marketplace at this time of year. As Joe mentioned previously, your best bet is after the season, but I'm sure you knew that already. I was just trying to help.

I assumed nothing.

That is, until I read your response.
