First snake found in the wild

I was out golfing the other day (the second time in my life) and this guy was on the sidewalk. I was both excited and nervous in picking up a wild snake and was kinda expecting to get bit by the guy. He was showing a bit of mimicry and was trying to rattle his tail. This is a gopher snake right?

Nice find! How do you live in CA and never find snakes?? What a great snake for your first one!!

Just noticed that you were in Modesto!!! VERY kewl. I lived there for a bit and just visited some friends there a week ago... Man, I never found a snake there... :(

What sweet looking little snake! I swear this is nothing that makes me feel as excited as when I happen upon a slithery critter in the wild!

I live in Cali and you actually rarely see wild snakes especially nowadays, I live up in the sticks compared to Modesto so I do see them once in a while. Definately not a regular occurrence though.

I go herping on occasion, not much luck. Always see them when I'm unprepared. I remember "snake hunting" with my dad when I was young and we would drive down to sac/Modesto and surrounding areas and not much luck.

My dad has had luck in the past field herping. Mostly rattlers, we had a big gopher male he caught when I was little. When he was a kid once he saw a California mt. Kingsnake. He has spent his whole life, as have I spent mine trying to find another one. But no such luck.

Hey, you're right near me! Good find!

I almost never see snakes in the wild, the CA king I found a few weeks ago was a total shock. :)

I'm in San Jose. I know Modesto isn't exactly SUPER close, but I drive therough there fairly often.

Nice find I just seen one of these at our local pet shop, kinda pricey.I know the nervous feeling about wild snake catches lol trembles me some times.

I grew up in Sacramento and only saw one snake in the wild. The other day I saw a second one in Marysville, and it was by far the biggest snake I've seen in the wild yet. I didn't snap a picture, I was too captivated looking at him to run inside. He was lifting up the upper half of his body, cobra style. All grey on top, white belly.

I live way up north on the coast now and see baby garters all the time. Weird that I move somewhere where it's cold and rainy all year around and suddenly snakes are everywhere.
