First time snake owner without a snake!

Hello everyone! I am about to get my first corn snake after I have been putting together its setup for over a month now. I am a huge animal and reptile lover and am currently in school to be a vet tech. But I actually have no experience with snakes and am quite timid of handling them. I don't know if it's my fear of them biting me or me accidentally hurting them. So I'm looking for a calm relaxed baby corn to help me get over the fear of handling them. I haven't had any luck with finding any breeders in my area and I've tried emailing a few online breeders but with no response. I think they probably think I'm crazy lol . So the search continues to find me the perfect corn snake. As with any animal I get, I like to go by temperament rather than looks. I'm not looking to become a breeder, I just want to have a cool pet that I can care for a long time. Thanks everyone for any advice or good info!

Have you checked the classifieds on here? A lot of the breeders here could help you choose a nice, calm snake. You should be seeing more babies available later this year, because most people have eggs hatching in the summer.

You can also check faunaclassifieds.com, if you haven't already! :)

Glad to see you are giving yourself time to set up! Very important. If you haven't already, do make sure you check out the care sticky (FAQ) on the home page :)
I will highlight the necessity of a thermostat with your UTH (under tank heat or heat mat)! I notice that this item often gets missed when new owners are setting up - myself included!

There are actually quite a few breeders to be found online (even in Canada where the hobby isn't as big), and if you can find an expo near you, even better.

If you want a calm snake, a juvenile or adult is often suggested over a hatchling, as the young ones get frightened more easily and haven't had the handling experience. They are also not as fragile, as you've mentioned your worry over hurting them.
That being said, I got my corn as a juvenile... and she was anything but calm ;) then again she hadn't been handled nearly at all for the first year of her life!

Best of luck on your search. I can't wait for you to stumble on the hidden snake keepers and breeders of the world... you might be pleasantly surprised as I was :)

I started with baby corn snakes. I was also a little nervous about them. My hatchling Mia bites me on a regular basis. Most of the time, she does not even break the skin. I found the older snakes much calmer but all my hatchlings except Mia have calmed down. I expect Mia to chill as she gets a little older. She is just 14gms right now.

I highly recommend South Mountain Reptiles Don is an amazing breeder and very knowledgeable. He answered all my questions very quickly by email.

Babies can be very flighty, so can adults! Look through the classifieds, check the BOI and enjoy whatever you choose :)

I'd recommend a yearling or adult. It will just be more relaxing than a baby- and easier to care for.

Thank you all for the responses! I just sent a message to Don from South Mountain Reptiles and looked at some of their snakes, hopefully he can help me out.

NH93 - I did actually just order a thermostat with a probe yesterday! It should be here by Wednesday. And with that, my 20 gallon tank will have everything it needs. I actually started with Zoo Meds 20g snake kit. I ordered one online and it got here and the glass was completely shattered so I went to Petsmart and bought a second one while the company refunded me the money for the first one and let me keep everything that it came with for free. So I have a backup UTH, light fixture, water dish, and an extra hide (I already have 3 in the tank). Also the setup has 3 thermometers, a hygrometer, 12" grapevine to climb on, mopani wood, and a live pothos plant. I'm really proud with how it looks! Can't wait to add the snake!!

Don from South Mountain Reptiles is great. I have 3 from him (1 is missing, though). Out of those 3, one of them was the most calm and chill baby. He was 8 grams when I got him, and he hasn't changed a bit. Super calm. The others are what I would consider more normal, though not nippy. Sometimes they'll rattle their tail but that hasn't happened in quite a while, now that they are yearlings.

Yeah my two from him could not be nicer. A little jumpy at first but once in your hand they both chill out like they oem the place.

Ok here he is! My very first corn snake! I named him Loki. This is the only picture I took for now, I'll probably take better ones tomorrow after he's settled in.
