Fun with Sculpey Clay

Bobo's Mama

proud corn mommy!
I know other people have posted their Sculpey clay creations before, but here are mine. I got this stuff a few months ago, but just now had the time to sit down and make these. I made two. The first was sort of a test because I'd never done one before and it's kind of rough around the edges. I forgot to make a hole, so I did it after it was already baked and its not the greatest looking thing, but it'll do. The other one is for my 2-year old Normal, Skizzard. I bought a little clay gun to go with the clay and used it for his name. On his I remembered to do the whole BEFORE I cooked it. The pink one is shiny because I already put the epoxy on it. The brown one is still cooling.

Whoah, very cool. I can't wait to take Ceramics class again this year to make hides for my girl. We use stoneware though, so we can't really achieve those cool waves of color. >_<

Very cool! This skill would come in handy for the big adults. (Just paid like $30 for a hide for Isabel!!)

You don't need a Ceramics class for these! No way, I've never taken a class before or anything. All I did was smoosh it up, flatten it out, and then mold it over a foil pie pan. I did use 5 different colors for the brown one, but most of them were various shades of brown orange.

I'm guessing that you get this clay at a craft store, like Michael's? Is it expensive?

For my adult corn, I just took -- oh, shoot, I can't remember the person's username from whom I got the idea -- a terra cota flower pot and with a hammer, chipped out a bigger hole & put it in his tank upside down. Voila, instant humid hide. :) Caramelo likes it; he's in it all the time... Otherwise, you could take a flower pot and instead of setting it upside-down, you could halve it so it can lie flat on its side; I haven't tried that, and I imagine that it could be a pain to do, but it's perhaps worth a try.

Though, I imagine that playing with clay is a lot more fun. :) And I like that the snake's name is on it, too. Cute!

Most craft/hobby stores will carry Sculpey; it usually runs about $2.00 for a 2 oz. pack (in a LOT of colors), as well as 1 pound bulk packs in white and terra cotta.

Here are some of mine. (Don't mean to hijack, Becky!)

I remember a thread with upside-down terra cotta flower pot "bases" (used for drainage) with a hole cut/punched in 'em for hides. For some reason, I keep thinking Mike B. uses these.

Though, I imagine that playing with clay is a lot more fun.
Yeah, it is, despite some color "run-off" on your hands. :)

Nice work, Becky!

jazz

The only problem is that the polymer clay is so ridiculously expensive that it would be a LOT cheaper to just buy the store bought hides.
