Holy snakes! Star running back survives reptile in helmet - Prep Rally - High School Blog

By Cameron Smith Prep Rally

Darrick Strzelecki , a star running back for Gravette (Ark.) High, is used to close encounters with linebackers on the football field. He's not so accustomed to run-ins with reptiles on the field ... or at least he wasn't until a practice on Tuesday. That's when Strzelecki took off his helmet during a water break and found what he thought was a toy snake.

. As it turns out, it wasn't a toy at all, though he only discovered that when the reptile slithered away.

"It looked like a rubber snake, and I thought someone had played a practical joke on me," Strzelecki told the Associated Press. "When I grabbed it by the tail, that's when it jerked, and I dropped the helmet."

Luckily, a Gravette assistant coach was able to confirm that the snake which hid in Strzelecki's helmet was non-venomous after killing it shortly after it slipped out of his head gear. A day later, school officials made a clean sweep of the school's locker room and all of the equipment used by its teams.

You can see Strzelecki, who was named to NWAOnline's Small Schools 2011 preseason team of the year , in action below.

"It's funny now, but it's something I don't take lightly," Gravette head football coach Bill Harrelson told the AP. "All snakes are deadly in my book."

The aforementioned fall cleaning will probably prove sufficient to ensuring Strzelecki doesn't have further close calls with his equipment, but one can never be certain.

That's even more true when your teammates are calling you "snake boy," hissing at you and wriggling their fingers through the ear hole of your helmet, as Strzelecki found out in the days following his surprising discovery.

"When you have it crawling on your head, it freaks you out," he said. "It creeped me out. Even through the rest of practice, it felt like the snake was still crawling on me."

Just irked me...to each their own though....I guess...I mean I wouldn't of been thrilled but to kill it and then be like all snakes are deadly to me...Idk I guess this is what separates us from the "norm"

Yeah I also was pretty upset about what the coach did and said. and the worst part of the whole thing is that it made headlines.

Right, like there's not enough going on in the world that this and "latest iPhone5 rumors" are what were focusing on!?

I understand that a typical coach or player might be ignorant and uninterested in snakes. BUT - to me, a PROFESSIONAL journalist would have taken time to click a couple of times on the Internet to find out just a tiny bit more, and to counteract the ignorance in the article he wrote. A PROFESSIONAL should care to make his product (article) as good and as accurate as possible, regardless of his personal feelings about snakes. That SHOULD be the difference between a professional journalist doing his job, and just some random member of the general public who encountered an unexpected herp, but has no reason or obligation to care about it one way or the other. IMHO, of course!

"All snakes are deadly in my book." --- How very intelligent & insightful this book must be..I must run out to get a copy...

Hahaha oh that made me laugh. Yes, let's all get a copy.

And Kathy I agree. It's definatly a little one sided. It's just like they say; There's two sides to every story and this is definatly only one side. I honestly feel the main purpose of the story was this sentence right here...." You can see Strzelecki, who was named to NWAOnline's Small Schools 2011 preseason team of the year , in action below." Hint hint cowboys, packers, patriots, etc. It's practically advertisement.

Haha! Shows you how bias works!

I saw that bit, but my eyes passed over it without thinking about it - because I care as much about sports as they obviously care about snakes, lol!

BUT - as much as I dislike (or at the very least, don't care about) sports, I would research it at least A LITTLE if part of my article depended on some aspect of it.

I saw this. And about went insane. I couldn't go to sleep because I was so worked up about it, so I wrote it out. I plan on sending the letter to Yahoo, the author, and the school. I get so worked up on these things. This only fuels people's hatred of snakes, and now the coach is setting a "good example" by killing the snake. And just think, that snake was 10-12 inches. IT COULD'VE BEEN A BABY CORN SNAKE! Blithering idiots.

I totally agree. Ignorance fuels hate. Apply it to almost any subject...even past historical events and it connects one way or the other. Animal wise, it makes me the saddest when its about snakes or pit bulls...because I truly believe it how the animal was raised and treated. We fostered a pit when our son was 4 months old and that dog was his guardian...anyways..back on topic... I'm glad your sending a letter. Hopefully they'll retract some sentences or post another story in reference to the first.

It's true-Most people who hate snakes the most know the least about them. I am glad to have a few people who are dedicated to educating the general public-those who are willing to listen anyway- about reptiles, snakes mostly, in the Houston area. Clint Pustejovsky of texassnakes.net & Thomas Davis of barmollysplace.com are 2 of the men I can think of specifically. Attending their shows I have seen some people who were there just because their kids wanted to see actually end up holding the snakes..some of them being their first time to hold one...you can tell their whole attitude changes sometimes. It is really great to see people who were self proclaimed snake haters for life come to appreciate that snakes have their place..they might not love them, but they stop hating all snakes. Children are so open to new things, animals in particular, but unfortunately many times their parents enforce their feelings on them before the child ever has a chance to form their own opinion. I am glad there are folks out there trying to teach the next generation not to fear something before they get a chance to learn about them.

Oh wow what a terrible article! :( Unfortunately, a lot of people feel that way and that's why people get away with writing things like that. Hate is usually caused by fear; fear is usually caused by lack of knowledge. If some people would just learn a little more, then maybe they'd change their minds. I had a friend of mine, who is TERRIFIED of snakes, hold mine about 2 weeks ago and totally change her perspective on them. She doesn't "love" them now or anything, but she's definitely not scared of them anymore, and doesn't dislike them. Now she always asks me about how I take care of mine and says "that's so cool" about it all :)
