Everything I have read online so far is that cornsnakes are a pretty good beginner snake, relatively calm and easy to handle. Are there exceptions to that basic rule of thumb? I know with dogs, just because a certain breed is known to be a good family dog, there can still be a "bad apple" here and there. Are snakes the same way? I would imagine that it would be the same principle, but thought I would verify.
 
If you mean temperament, you'd have to be fairly unlucky to get a corn that didn't adjust to handling. Having said that, there seems to be a trend that sunkisseds can be a bit fiesty, from reading some threads on here, and some miamis prefer lizards as hatchlings.
 
Yeah, snakes are the same way. Here is a thread I started on a specific kind of corn snake, and here is one about gender-related differences. Consensus is that there is no useful predictor for personality, but most of them calm down with handling.

Great, thanks very much for the feedback. They really do sound like a good choice for a first time snake owner as me and my boyfriend would be. We will keep researching so we have all our ducks in a row before actually purchasing anything, but hopefully that won't be too long and then I can share my excitement with everyone on here!
 
I am glad to see I am not the only person with a boyfriend interested in getting a snake! And it is nice to know that there are people out there who have good information and are willing to share. I am with kmom...hopefully sometime soon we will be able to get a new baby and be able to say "thanks" by sharing photos and such!

I know I just started getting into snakes seriously this past spring, but it has turned into an addiction already. I keep wanting to show off the ones I have to my friends and family although they are not always as excited about it as I am.

I do find that the cornsnakes I have are pretty much all very laid back and mellow. I have a couple of hatchlings that are still a little feisty, but from everything I have learned on this site, with patience and handling I am confident they will calm down as well.

You will find that the people on here really know their stuff and are very willing to help!
