getting a corn snake

rayray

Rules......<shrugs>
hello, i was wantin to get a snake and read the corn snakes are good for beginners. Also i have read up on it and have finally got my parnets to agree on it lol. i was just wondering if any one had anythign to say or advice/info.

Corns are great snakes for a first time keeper. Just about any question you have has been asked on this forum at least once so whenever something pops into your mind, check it out on the search page. Good luck!

What type of corn are you looking at getting?

best thing to do is get your viv set up before you bring a snake home. make sure the temps are correct and you have all the supplies you need. learn all you can so that you know what to expect and so you will know how to handle any problems, should they arrise.

i'd recommend picking up kathy love's corn snake manual. it has everything you need to know before getting a snake (and more)! you can get it at most pet stores (i got mine at petsmart), or online at www.cornutopia.com or www.amazon.com.

good luck and congrats!!

ok thanks stefmc. Im not sure what kind oif corn i want. I guess what ever i can find in the pet stores. I know there are reg. corns, and snow corns but i dont know about any other than that. But I plan on getting a book about them with in a day or two. The whole plan was getting it on my birthday which is in april so i guess i have plenty of time to get everything. Thanks for your replies.

Definitely get the book Stef recommended...

The Corn Snake Manual By Kathy Love is an indispensible resource for keepng corn snakes...and almost any question you could possibly have will be answered in it.

how much do corn snakes cost neway. I heard they werent that expensive themselves but getting everything you need is what cost so much.......?

It varies depending on where you live, but most pet stores will sell a hatchling corn snake for $50-100. Complete tank setups can be found for about that same amount.

Since this is your first snake I'd recommend trying to locate an older snake if you can find one. They are established feeders and are more tolerant of environmental changes.

You mentioned getting your corn from a pet store. If possible, you may want to contact a breeder and get it off of them. Chances are, they'll be a lot cheaper that way than through a store.

There are a few other things. I know this doesn't apply to all pet stores, so please nobody jump down my throat about it... some places don't take real good care of their animals. I was in one recently that most of the snakes had multiple sheds in the cage, little or no water, and the snakes were crawling around in their own feces. They were reported to the PSPCA, and hopefully got shut down. There was no updage last time I checked. But if you buy from a store like that, there's a real good chance you might be getting yourself a sick snake or one with feeding problems.

And look at it this way, if you're on a budget and can get one cheap from a breeder, you can invest more in a good setup, or start saving up for your next snake!

I agree in theory, but if you're only buying one, overnight shipping is a burden. The snake might only cost you $40, but add another $50 for shipping and voila, the price is the same. :)

Good point, that's why I'm going to a show to get mine. I'd be way too nervous having one shipped to me, especially with how cold it is this time of year, that I always forget about that possibility and that the shipping could be quite a lot. However, I think that pet store experience kinda put a damper on all stores for me lately, so my opinion could be biased...lol

and if anyone would like to read my original post about this pet store and see why I think the way I do about some of them, check this out.

This is my first post about it.

Here's my second post after I went back the next day with a pen and paper to actually write down what I saw so I could give exact details when I reported them.

You should be able to see it anyway even if you're not a member at Kingsnake. I hadn't found this forum yet, but I had been on Kingsnake for about 6 months when I posted this, so that's why I can't give you guys a cornsnakes.com link for it.

lol...well hey, give me a break. I was at an even worse one before that. And besides, I'm new, so that's my excuse!

so would you all know if there are ne breeders in kentucky around the louisville area casue thats where im at.

Hello RayRay,
Its great that you are doing so much work learning before bringing a snake home!

Try running an add in the "Wanted" section for a local breeder. There may be one close to you and they don't even realize your looking yet!

try this

I would say go to Faunaclassifieds.com and post a wanted ad. I remember seeing an ad from a guy in Western Kentucky. I'm not sure where Louisville is, but you should still try there anyways if you can't find one on this board. That is where I found my cornsnake. The breeder I bought from charged me $20 for the snake and $40 for shipping which isn't too bad. His address is www.reptiliandreams.com

Good luck! :wavey:

Reptilian Dreams is a great place...Mike is a good guy...with great prices...
I am waiting for the weather to clear...I have a pair of Dumeril's Boas I bought from Mike...but it is too cold to ship.

Also...be sure to check the Board of Inquiry (BOI) on Fauna Classifieds to check out the person you are planning on dealing with...please use the search function first to see if anyone else has posted any information about the person...then you can put up an inquiry post if you cannot find them...
Be sure to read the rules before posting so you don't anger the gods...LOL

Thank you all very much. I was so happy when i saw this forum on my google serch. Now im really into getting a snake of my own. Thanks very much for all your info and help/replies.

I bought my snake from a pet store, and now I wish I would have bought it from a breeder. A couple nice things about getting it from a breeder:

1. 99% of the time they take better care of their corns. They know a whole lot more about taking care of a corn than the average pet store.

2. Breeders can give you family history of your corn (e.g. what parents yours came from)

3. Also, they can give you a hatch date (helpful for knowing your corns birthday)

4. Most of the time they will sex the corn for you, so you know whether its a boy or a girl.

Sadly I don't know what the parents of my corn are, the sex, the hatch date or if it REALLY is a blizzard!!! Anyways...I'm glad to hear your getting a corn! Like CAV said...search out this forum for all your answers, and if you have any questions(no matter how silly) ASK THEM.

Edit: Oh...and btw, i think you might have spelled your name wrong on your signature.
