Gigantic Black Ratsnake!

Carinata

Ever Evolving Exotics
One day while herping I looked ovcer this cliff that has small trees growing out of it. I saw a black rat hanging on one of the branches. So I steped down onto one of the ledges and I hiked it and got it up off the tree. The snake was huge. Measuring 7'1 here is the gigantic black rat!

Nice, David!!! I "almost" ordered a pair of black rats a few years ago. They were supposedly from some "giant" stock. Seeing your pic makes me wish I had pushed the "confirm order" button. LOL.

Nice find. My husband also loves your shirt, he wants to see a real pic of a Cobra in that exact position as the large black and white one on your shirt so he can air brush it!!!

Ok from the picture it looks like a black racer but you said it was a rat snake so I said I wish we had them because I didn't think we had any. Unless racers are rat snakes? Did I just learn something lol?

I just looked up the snakes of wv and under black rat snake it says that it's often confused with the black racer. Says the black racer is all black except for under the chin. But so is that snake you got. So what the heck is the difference? Now I'm all confused.

Here's some info I quickly pulled up on the Black Rat Snake...

Here's some info I quickly pulled up on the Black Racer...
Black Racer

There are times when pics may look alike, but there IS a difference. :) I tried to pull the info from the SAME site for both snakes... that way THEY could explain the differences. LOL.

Thanks that is more helpful. I guess if I had picked up the big black snake in my yard the other day and looked at it's belly I would have seen that is wasn't a racer. For one thing it didn't run away like most do. I just thought it was because it had either food or eggs inside it because it's lower half was rather fat. So I guess it was a rat snake in my yard and not a racer. :)

Ya know..I look at these maps and it says NJ is full of all these different snakes..The one herping trip I took last year didn't come up with anything except one snake we saw in the water as we were walking over a bridge and the water was so muddy that it covered the snake so that I didn't even know what color it was..lol

LOVE Black Rats!

Here is one I rescued off the side of the road several years ago here in Knoxville, TN. Pardon the way I look - I was actually taking a nap when my daughter ran in and yelled "Dad! There's a snake on the side of the road!" I jumped up, ran to my wife's waiting car - barefoot and without my glasses LOL.

Brought it home to snap some pics and then let it go.

Oh, and she was gentle as a kitten. No musking, no biting.
