I see a lot of people referring to snakes as certain amount of grams? I don't know what this means.
 
Yep, even though technically, grams are a unit of mass, not weight. But since most of us weigh our snakes on THIS planet's surface, it doesn't matter so much. Of course your corn may weigh 1 ounce here on Earth, but it would weigh much less on the moon. It will have a mass of 28.5g on either surface. ;)

Note to self: Take snakes to the moon...

But anyway, like everyone else said, grams is a measure of weight. I think we use it because it's more accurate than ounces, especially when talking about smaller corns.

We use grams as a measure of weight, but they're really not. And grams aren't really more accurate than ounces. 100g is 3.5274 ounces. Grams are just convenient units for the weight-ranges of corns.

Ditto to what Dean said. Also, if you did take your snake to the moon, they would still have the same amount of mass in grams there as they do here on earth.

And its not more accurate than ounces, I think its easier to deal with the numbers. Its lot easier to say "oh, she weighs 348g" as opposed to "oh, she weights 12.275339 ozs"

Okay then, now what we've got that covered. When do you weigh them? I know mine is a changes size depending on when he was fed, when he pooped, after he pooped, and when he is hungry. So when do you weigh him accurately? After he has digested all his food? But why would anyone do that? I want to brag about him at his full potential! :poke:

Abbi -- dean is correct, it's customary to quote weights that are done when your snake is on "empty", that is right before a meal. The weights can change pretty drastically with eating and defecating. If you're weighing to judge overall health and growth, make sure you obtain weights at the same time... for example - I weigh all my snakes before meals once a month and use those as comparisons. Make sense?

I feed Mondays and Fridays, so if I weigh I weigh on Wednesday. For the most part, I believe that if you are using it for your own personal reference, then as long as you keep it consistant it is okay. I do it every other week, on the same day.

Sorry Pat, but this is meaningless. Keeping things consistent isn't useful if what you're doing is consistently wrong. No one who KNOWS what they are doing would weigh their snakes within 48 hours of their last feeding.

I feed my snake Monday morning, and weigh him Wednesday night, and by then he has returned to his uniform shape, and almost always has pooed and has an "empty" stomach.

I completely agree with this statement. Alli is trying to figure out how to do things. Both Dean and myself are trying to help with what is considered to be 'standard'. Your information Pat, is confusing and incorrect. Please do your research before posting.

Tonya, just because we probably started keeping snakes before this kid's MOTHER was out of high school, and just because between the two of us we probably own a couple of hundred snakes, and just because he HIMSELF has only owned a single hatchling for a couple of months, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't defer to his wisdom and methods. He's a prodigy-- a natural. I'm sure that he already realizes that just because a 22g hybrid corn craps every couple of days that it doesn't mean that the schedule holds true for an older snake like the OP's. He knows this already. He knows EVERYTHING already. You and I have much to learn from him if we can just stay quiet and open our ears and eyes to his infinite knowledge and wisdom. I look forward to further enlightenment from Him. :bowdown:
