Snake Bitten
I'm being told this snake is a caramel motley...to me it looks too red...and like more of a vanishing stripe? Please tell me what you think. Thanks Laura

I sure wouldn't call it a caramel motley. I'm thinking either a normal stripe het caramel or possibly a hypo stripe het caramel. You may have been sent the wrong photo by mistake.

Yeah, if it was caramel anything it would have green eyes wouldn't it? I definitely agree it is a normal stripe with vanishing pattern. Pretty though!

Thats not a caramel stripe... I agree.. Eithier a normal or hypo vanishing stripe.. I would lean towards normal though..

So Susan, how are you coming up with the het caramel statement on this particular snake? I know that there are some claims that underlying hets can be determined by some modifications to how the snake looks but I am very certainly such a novice in that regard I wouldn't even be able to hazard a guess.

I really appreciate everyone's input...I'm trying to prove the genetics on a hypo blood PH stripe and caramel male, obviously, if I knew this snake was het caramel it would go a long way toward determining his status...she is pretty enough to contemplate buying in any case.

If it were just a hypo, (or just an amel), it would be more red. Het caramel can present a less than red, more towards orange or yellow snake. If the genetics involved are as simple as, for example, a normal, hypo, or amel vanishing stripe.
I use "amel" in my example because it appears to my colorblind eyes that on an amel snake, the het caramel yellow wash is more obvious.

LOL...well...sometimes what is red to one person may be orange to another. I think your snake would be redder, or even a more vivid orange, if it were not for the possibility/likelihood of it being het caramel.

I'm sure you know that a butter is just a homozygous amel snake...that is also homozygous for caramel. The yellow trumps (masks) red in the butter, sulfur, or golddust morphs.

It is definitely not motley or caramel but you are right in that it looks like a vanishing stripe normal and a very nice looker. Is it from someone here in Colorado?
John

As Eric said, it is the overall look of an increased amount of yellow to the color that in some cases may indicate the presence of the caramel gene in het form.

I went through my photos to find ones on the same background of various snakes in my collection whose genetics I have proven. I know the background colors are off in some...old photos taken with an old camera. But trust me, the difference in the snakes' coloration is just as different from each other as the photos indicate. See if you can pick out the ones that are het caramel.

If you said all of them, you would be correct. I have just proven that not all het caramels show an increased amount of yellow, but many do. Het markers are strictly educated guesses, nothing more.

Too true. Below is my Amel Mot het Caramel Stripe. I got lucky though I know from the breeder that she is deffinitely these as one parent is a caramel stripe, actually I think it might have been butter stripe rather than a caramel stripe het amel. I would have to ask him again.
