(Tried to search for this but couldn't come up with a good guess as to how age and size correlate. Sorry if this had been done one million times before.)

I'm not sure who bred Cloudy Sky, a Miami Phase, but I know that he had fed at least twice at East Bay Vivarium before we bought him. I also have a shed from his shoebox, so he obviously shed once. I haven't had a chance to take pictures to gauge his size, but if I'm holding him in the palm of my hand with my arm against my chest, he can crawl up to my bent elbow with the very tip of his tail still wrapped around my index finger. I guess that to be about 14 to 15 inches? And he's not as thick around as my little finger.

What's a good guess for an age? One month? Two months? Older?

(Apparently there's a pressing need to determine his birthdate which I had not forseen.)

From your description, I have no doubt that he emerged from the egg on September 3rd, at 5:42pm. I hope this satisfies the "pressing need". :spinner:
 
From what I have seen, and hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong, the average hatch month is October. I'm not 100% sure of this, but this is the best I have been able to figure, based on what I have read and seen from various breeder websites.

I had to search, too, as my Sammi Snake is actually my 2 1/2 yr old daughter's snake (at least she thinks so, even though daddy has to do all the work :santa: )...she wanted to know how old she is...

Like, I said...if I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me...

That's a little late, I think. My estimate would be July to August. :shrugs:

TyFlier, I'd have gone with sometime in October as well and been very happy. But then I got this other response which was so durned specific that it just HAS to be right. :crazy02:

Maybe I'll bump the birthdate to farther along in September so as to average the two responses. But 5:42 is staying. :)

Well... Lady G was a a July baby... Kieran is an October baby.... Avalon(?) is a Nov baby... Don Dorcha is a Sept baby and the new little girl is a July baby... and Kathy Love told me to check in May about a possible Naples line Ghost.... so I would say.... Oct isn't the average :)


Dean knows all.... so I would take his date :)
 
July is when mine hatch, but I know there are a few out there who have some in Aug. and Sept.
 
Well, July/August works for me. My daughter's birthday is in July, and mine is in August, so why not? I guess the two of them can share a birthday :santa: .
 
Of my five colubrids, four have a July birthday and one has an August birthday. So I'd say those would be the busiest months.
 
I know that reptile shows are slim pickin's for corn snakes until the end of august. All four of my 06's (from 3 different breeders) are from july and just now are about 15 inches.
 
OK, so Dean says that he KNOWS that Cloudy Sky was born on the 3rd at 5:42, and who am I to argue with him?

But your snakes are about 15 inches, so I'm saying now that Cloudy Sky was born on July 3rd 2006 at 5:42. Writing it down, sticking it in "The Book" which lives in the bookshelf just under Cloudy Sky's viv, and closing out this insanity.

Thanks for everyone's help. I kind of knew he wasn't a bitty baby, but other than that had just no idea.

(I'm having flashbacks to our dog when we got him from animal control as a year old male. Within a few days of getting home he started dropping all his baby teeth and growing in adult canines. Umm. That's not a year old dog. Oh My. Forgot to check his teeth, didn't I? What a big five month old you are! 72 pounds, eh? How big are you planning on getting?)
 
Yea...mine's about 16"...so I'm going with July...July 16 will make my daughter happy ;).

Well,I don't believe you can't really use length. My new guy was hatched on Sept 3rd and he's 16.49 inches long already :)

Sounds like a good date, but you really can't use length... Don Dorcha, my new guy, was hatched on *Sept 6th* and he's already 16.49 inches :)
 
It's true you can't make an accurate guess of a snake's age by it's length, but who's going to ask the corn for it's birth certificate anyway?

You also have to take into account that a corn that's been in a pet shop for a while is likely to be smaller than a corn in someone's home, or from a breeder. It depends a lot on how often and how much they were fed.

But...there are exceptions to that rule, too. I got my snow corn from a private breeder who'd only fed her every 10-14 days. Thus, at 2 1/2 months of age, she was still only 11 inches long. She caught up just fine, though and now at 2 years of age, she is my longest corn at 44".
