Guppies safe for garters?

Elusive

Totally irrelevent.
I've been wondering because my research is not very clear, as some sites say they are fine, while others disagree. What fish are safe to feed Garters, as I know thiaminase can be quite the problem.

(I've already attempted to feed pinkies, but the little guy seems to only be interested in lively things.)

I believe that guppies and minnows are safe. You just want to steer clear of any goldfish feeders. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I learned that somewhere.

They have a list of safe feeders on the thamnophis site. From what I remember the guppies are safe. Minnows are not but I have fed them in small quantities.

The way I would switch mine over is to put tiny pinky parts in the water with the fish. They would scoop up the pinky parts with the fish. You might need to let them very hungry. If that does not work just scent the pinky parts with the fish and put them in the same dish/container that you would put the fish in. All of mine eventually switched to pinkies.

If I remember correctly, Minnows are a no-no. Guppies are OK. So are nightcrawlers. Silversides and strips of tilapia filet (dusted with calcium) are good, if you can get him to take f/t fish. Those are the main ones that come to mind. Ditto on thamnophis.com being a fantastic information site/community for garters. :)

ah, interesting about the minnows! I did not know, I've never kept garters :) I just heard lots of bad things about the gold fish, I guess I misheard about minnows somewhere.

Minnows (with the main one being rosy reds), though not nearly as bad as goldfish (which, in addition to thiaminase, are very fatty and tend to carry significant parasite loads), are still dangerously high in thiaminase. I'm not sure, but I think I've heard that white cloud mountain minnows aren't too bad? But I'm not 100% sure, and wouldn't try it without finding out for sure.
