half shed snake

I posted this somewhere else but thought I might get a better response here. My corn snake is not completely shedding. She has already shed the head and neack portion but farther down her body she hasn't. It is not so much loose skin but rather just a dull color. I've tried spraying her down, putting her in a highly humid enclosure with some wet paper towels, and also feeding her to loosen the skin but it hasn't worked. She is still a juvenile, only a couple months old. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

I should also add that recently she has been avoiding the warm side. she just hangs out on the cool side of her cage.

low to mid 80s on warm, mide to high 70s on cold. however, she's been avoiding the warm side ever since her eyes turned cloudy (less than a week ago).

dunno what to tell you.... :shrugs: is the faded skin flaky?

No. Some of it is flaky here and there and I help her take that off with a moist paper towel but most of it is on there like regular skin. I'm thinking about getting a shedding aid. Know of any good ones?

If that doesn't work, I guess I will just have to leave it till the next shedding cycle.

no i have never had any shedding issues... what are you using for substrate?

Dampen a bath towel and let the snake crawl through it. You may need to apply a little pressure to get the skin off, but be gentle. Keep doing this till the skin comes off.

Good luck!

I've tried the towel thing and it doesn't work. The skin isn't loose. I'm using aspen bedding. The snake seems to be avoiding the warm side though, and when I pick her up, she always feels cold. Do you think if I try putting her in a smaller container and "forcing" her to be on the warm side would help?

If the skin was loose it would have come off by itself. Have you tried doing it with a BATH towel? I've read that you have used paper towels in this thread. Also, have you tried applying pressure while she crawls through the towel?

Do not force her to be on the warm side, she will choose the temperature that is best for her.

Mary-Beth is right, your snake needs a little bit of help this time, please don't leave it too long.

Most people recommend the paper towel method. The way I have done this before is by letting the snake 'soak' for a short time - though spraying a juvenile should be quite sufficient - and simply applying pressure as the snake moves through your fingers pulls the old skin off.

When the snake sheds naturally it isn't 'loose', it sort of peels off backwards (sorry not a very good description there!) so don't expect it to just fall off in your hands.

To avoid this in future, make sure your vivarium is humid enough. To do this, you can move the water bowl closer to the warm side, or 'mist' inside the viv to increase moisture levels.

Best of luck!

I tried all this, and what I mean when I say 'loose' is that it is not peeling off at all. It's on there like regular skin.

It doesn't always look like it's peeling off. The last time mine didn't shed completely, he only managed to get the head and parts of the neck & tail off by himself. A day later he still hadn't got any further so I bathed him to see if that helped. Even though the rest of it looked like 'regular' skin as you describe, it came off very easily.

I already tried this. Looking back at some pictures from before she started the shed, it looks like it was always like that, even from when I first got her.

Is it possible that the skin is less vibrant in color going down the tail? I've tried many things to get her to shed, including using a shed aid. Nothing is working. Like I said, looking at some photos it seems she's been like this since I got her. So, I don't know if she is naturally this color or if she hasn't shed that area of her body since she was at the breeder.

If she has shed it, I have not found the rest of the skin. Also, the very end of the tail (past the anus) has more color than the area that doesn't look like it has shed.

Can anyone offer any advice before I take this up with the breeder?
