Hey guys i got my first corn snake today a 7 week old normal, but every time i try to pick him up he goes a bit mad an try's to escape. i dont want to just grab him in case i hurt him. is this normal for a 7 week old??? and ideas how to get him use to being handled?
 
You need to leave the snake completely alone, no handling, for a week. It's terrified! After a week, you may feed it the first meal. Then do not handle for two more days, or it will regurge (throw up). This is VERY DANGEROUS for the snake to have happen. Then you can start handling for short periods, making very sure to not let it fall out of your hands.
 
The very most important thing, at this point, is allowing the snake to settle in and become comfortable enough to eat. Snakes can associate the stress of shipping/moving/rehoming with being fed, and refuse in that stressful situation. So he has to be as settled in as possible before the first feeding attempt. Handling during this period stresses him greatly, and reduces your chances of a successful first feeding.
