Happy Birthday, Dear Rich,
Happy Birthday to you!

Now you're 52.

I hope you have a prosperous year.

Thanks, everyone!

I wish I could say my birthday had been an excellent day, but it just didn't turn out that way.

We had a power outage for about 3.5 hours on Sunday, and it was only a lucky draw that we were home that day. If we had gone out to visit friends on Sunday rather than Saturday, I would have been in a bad way. The mouse building we have runs two A/C units constantly during the warmer months. If they go out during a power failure, temps raise in the building QUICKLY. Within an hour of the power being out, the temps in the building got to 86 degrees and I had to lug over my battery backup packs from my computer to run the window fans to get some airflow into the building and cool it down. If it gets up to 90 degrees, all of the pregnant female mice will die. Much hotter, then all of the upper shelves would have died. With baby snakes hatching out, this could have been a real problem for me.

I have been toying with the idea for a couple of weeks now about getting an automatic generator that would start up in an emergency like this. Not I am darn serious about it. It is not going to be cheap, but I don't see any other alternative. I can't be constantly on pins and needles when I go out of town that the power might go out and I would lose all of my animals. During a typical hot day in north Florida, if power would be out all day long, I would probably lose the reptiles as well as the rodents. It is going to be expensive to do this, but it may save my business one day.

So I guess one good thing about the incidents that took place on my birthday is that it set me sharply in focus about what I have to do.

Thanks.

Well....even though you didn't really have a relaxing day, at least you learned something.
And remember, you saved tons of lifes on your bday too. That is already the best gift that you have given to a lot of the lifes out there.

Even though you didn't have a relaxing day.
I still hoped that you have enjoyed and had tons of fun during your bday.

I hate to do this. . .

I really really hate to make a shameless plug about anything, especially something so expensive, but I used to work for a company that was a distributor for generators. They took me in as a little pup fresh out of high shcool, and were the nicest people ever, it's a tiny company and they have good one-on-one customer service. So if you were struggling to find somewhere that sells automatic generators (they have all kinds), you might wanna check them out.

Again, I am sorry for the advertising, I mean no disrespect. The EA may have brainwashed me while I worked there without my knowledge! I hope this didn't offend.

Also, happy belated birthday. I know I really appreciate all you do for the online herping community. And those mice appreciate being alive. Well, at least until feeding time!

BloodyCats,

Personally (keep in mind this is not my forum, of course) I think that type of post is 100% apropriate. Frankly, I like to think of myself as a responsibile contributor to humanity, and as such, when it comes time for me to part with my money I definately prefer to give it to like-minded "RCs" than to globalized corporations whose sole objective is basically opression of the masses. Frankly, it's nice to hear that there are still companies out there who whould have this level of responsibiliy - so many brokers of goods or services these days don't seem to care about their product, their employees, or even their customers, and so for me it is good to be reminded now and then that there ARE still forces of GOOD in the world :p

RichZ,

Trust me, you aren't the only person relieved that things worked out as they did for you this weekend - I'm certainly not the only person out here anxious to meet the 2002's you will (God willing) be hatching and feed-training for me.

While insurance companies can kiss my arse, there's nothing like providing a little TRUE insurance for yourself. Obviously I strongly urge you to get a diesel generator installed (and tested!!!) ASAP. While I have never priced an emergency generator myself, it's obviously no small consideration for you.

On the "plus" side, this is a type of expenditure that you can depreciate over many years, and you should make a little "in return" with some tax savings, not to mention the peace of mind you get (oh, well I guess I DID just mention it.) In summary, obviously I wish your B-day had been better, but it might have been something that needed to happen, eh? And many best wishes for your forthcoming V-B-day, whenever you should decide to proclaim it.)

^Curtis

Well I'm a day late but Happy Birthday Rich!

Funny how you just got done expressing to me how you felt the need for a generator and then the very next day your power goes out eh? Sounds like an omen to me.
