Have I Left It Too Late?

And that's one reason why I never did it. It seems like moving it around right after eating is stressful. I just don't see the connection myself. Snakes go on sent, that is their primary and most salient sense. If you don't smell like food, they won't think you're food.

This is just my opinion, I'm sure you'll get another educated opinion on the other side of this debate. Either way, our pets are being cared for and that is the most important aspect to all of this....there is no argument about that :)

That's a fair point to be honest, he just seems to think EVERY warm thing is food...

Absolutely, best of the best for these guys! Now, if I could only find where he's hiding and get him back home (6 days he's been out) :(

Oh he's lost? I didn't know that....well get a bunch of f/t,'d food, lay them around and see if he takes the bait.....

I've only ever lost one snake but he showed up about 10 days later hungry. Thanks to an intoxicated roommate...he's no longer my roommate.

Stay positive, he'll show up soon enough, but yeah that must be a bummer....

I'd have kicked him out! D:

Yeah, I'm real worried about him. Trying to keep all the heaters running to keep the house warm.

I've never had a snake regurg a meal by feed outside of its tank. I always feed in a feeding tub. If for nothing else it eliminates the chances of substrate being ingested.

Hasn't seemed to bother either my BP or corn. Neither has regurg and the BP is almost a year old now. After they are done eating I gently pick they up and place them back in their tanks. Once in their tanks they go into their hides.

Feeding in its enclosure is a bad idea. Some animals will associate every thing that goes into the tank as food. Get used to being nipped until it gets used to you. It's definitely not happy about something. How often do you feed it?

In the 25 years I've been keeping snakes I've never fed mine in a separate tub. In that same 25 years I've been nipped a handful of times, not related to feeding but because of startling them.

While many people insist on this practice, others like myself don't find it necessary.

Just my experience.

Yes, a couple of times when I went to pick them up when they were still and a couple of times when I was poking around the shavings while they were hidden.

Nimbuzz did you find your pal? By the way, the thread is very interesting. I don't know a whole bunch about snakes but I feed mine also in his tank and we had no problems with our friendship so far. He's used to being touched and didn't try to take me for food.

Haven't found him yet, sadly, I'm really worried about him. I mean, honestly, I've looked EVERYWHERE.

But what about putting it back in? Won't that possibly irritate the stomach?

I think you are thinking the worst of the recommendation not to handle for a few days after eating. Putting them back in their vivs is totally fine once the prey has settled down into their stomachs (you will see the lump) but taking them to the carnival or square dancing may not let the meal sit well!

Basically. it is a strong suggestion not to play with them or take them outside for photos, etc. during the digestions period. Like ourselves right after Thanksgiving dinner, a roller coaster ride is probably not the best idea, but gently carrying me to the couch is just fine. (But save me a piece of pumpkin pie, please.)

It's never too late, it just takes longer to earn the snakes trust. Regular handling will curb the behaviour over time. Just needs to be built up to avoid too much stress. Starting out with 10-15 mins a day, and working up from there. Corns have tiny teeth, very thin gloves will suffice. Still might startle the heck out of you though :)

When I've had people tell me that they feed out of the enclosure in a separate feeding tub, I've only noticed it to be for one or both of two reasons: avoiding substrate ingestion and possible aggression issues. Both can be negated in my opinion with the right approach.

Ingestion of substrate will always be possible when feeding in a viv, but a snake would have to ingest a decent amount and regularly do so to be an issue for impaction. A tiny piece by itself won't cause harm. Obviously they do so in the wild (although if they did die from it, we wouldn't know right?) but it would cause so so many deaths that it just doesn't happen a lot. More often than not, their rather robust digestive system would just pass it through or break down what it could depending on the material. My snakes don't love it but they allow me to pull off any pieces stuck to the mouse with tongs while they're working on it.

None of my snakes have mistaken me for food, but the kingsnake I have is sometimes INCREDIBLY eager to come out and inspect me, in these situations i make a fist as i approach him. Very obvious that it's too large to be food, and after he's inspected me, I'll continue on to do whatever else. Never been bitten by him except the one time i dropped a mouse and went to pick it up with my hand, like an idiot.

Bit of a ramble there I know... :)

I found him on the stairs just an hour ago and now he's got a full belly. All I can say is, I sat there and cried with relief.
