heat cable thermostat?

here is a question, i bought a heat cable the one with the two strand black cable and the thicker orange cable with a built in thermostat, do i need to cut the thermostat off of it? i would assume that it doesnt kick on until near freezing. thanks in advance for any advice
 
it is made by easyheat , it is an 18ft long cable for heating pipes for 25 dollars, what does evreyone else use for heating rows of boxes?
